mobile babies and older dc's toys?

This is not an issue yet but soon will be. My DD is 41/2 months and DS is 3. What do you all do when your baby is able to get at older kid's toys? I'm mostly thinking about small toys that are choking hazards. I've been wondering about this and the best solution I can think of is that all the small toys go in DS's room. That would kind of work but he'll probably bring them down to play with. Also his train set won't work work upstairs. Has anyone come up with any better solutions? To be honest, I'm kind of dreading her learning to crawl

If its something super teeny tiny aka choking hazard my older child ( dd ) plays with it at the kitchen table or on my bed or in my room with the door shut. Mostly on the kitchen table or on my bed. Her room is on the second floor and she is only 3 so I don't really expect her to play upstairs by herself. her fav toys are her polly pockets ( super tiny pieces) so she is usually at the table with them and I moniter the floor for any pieces she has dropped.
If its a toy thats not a choking hazard then she just plays wherever but I warn her that ds might get into it unless she plays on my bed or on the table etc.

Guess I'd better clear off a space, we're cluttered here.

DD is 8 1/2 she has a ton of 'stuff' her toddler and baby brother shouldn't get to. I don't want her to always feel closed off from the family so we use baby gates. We LOVE baby gates. The hallway to the bathroom and her room is blocked off when the boys are up. As we are potty training, that gate actually moved to block off just her doorway, so the bathroom is open. The floor of her room and all those toys MUST be picked up and cleared away when she is done playing. It's a little more work for her, but i has been presented to her in the context of caring for her stuff and her family, and she is really good about it most of the time.

We fenced off part of our dining room (it's way bigger than we are using) and put all of DD's unsafe stuff behind the fence. She has a table for crafting, a small table with my old laptop which she sometimes uses to play games, her dollhouse, and a bookshelf with some toys and craft supplies.

It's been very difficult so far. DD2 is 7.5 months and getting around pretty fast on the floor. DD1 has legos, tiny wooden shapes and sticks, beads, etc...it seems like we look and look and think we have everything picked up but DD2 will find it if there is something we missed. I'm at the point where I'm thinking we might have to move stuff upstairs to her bedroom but I hate to do that and have her isolated.
So, we are still working on it.

Comb the floor and vacuum daily. Oh and fish crap out of his mouth

We've done really well, but things fall and DD gets stuff out and "forgets". I spent a half hour freaking out over an earring in the mysterious somewhere a bit ago, DH found it in the baby's toy bin, ugh.
