Old Entertainment Center: Get Rid Of / Redo

Thread Starter
so in our living room we have this old entertainment center... is really really really shabby and i would love to get rid of it.
the thing is that iit was my husband's parents' and he always bring up the "but it was my parents'!!!" card when i mention i want to get rid of it.
one time he even said "but its oak!!!" (which i dont think it is, looks lke plain old particle board to me)...
i need help with coming up with arguments to leave it behind, or alternatively if anyone knows of some good resources about how to redo/renovate it, please let me know!!! i tried to google it, but nothing helpful comes up
its not like its the only thing left from his parents, we have lots and lots of other stuff that has more nostalgic value than that darn thing...
i think he may not just want to deal with getting rid of it it / getting sth new.
... and it was in the house when i moved in after we got married, so i never really had a say in putting it there, if that matters

Can you post a picture of it so we can take a look and that will help with making a informed desicion? If it is indeed oak it would be awesome if you could find a way to bring it back to life but if it is plywood and depending on the shape it is in it may not be doable.

You could always make it into a children's play kitchen. Here's a couple links:
