Spice jars

Such a tiny part of the kitchen (individually, at least), and yet SUCH a huge PITA. Does anyone know if my perfect spice jars exist?

Here's the ideal:
-Square shape so they fit in the drawer with no wasted space (okay, not a requirement, but would be nice)

-Glass or stainless, or other dishwasher safe material. Preferably not plastic.

-Wide mouth (wide enough to fit my tablespoon-size measuring spoon in there (or at least the teaspoon size)

-Tops like these: http://www.amazon.com/Ounce-Glass-Sp...tp_st_edpp_url or even with just one set of holes, but the idea is that I can flip up the top with one hand and shake the container if I want to, or just remove the top to stick a measuring spoon in w/o having to pry off a tight-fitting little plastic saucer that will go flying into the dog's water dish or under the fridge.

-Small enough to fit in my kitchen drawer (I have a TON of spices, so maybe 0.5 oz and 1-2 oz jars would be about it.)

Here's the thing: If iI buy certain brand-name spices, I can get the jars with the tops I want. But only certain spices have these tops, and they're like $6.00 for a 1 oz jar. And they're not wide-mouth, so even my 1/2 tsp doesn't fit. Then there's the issue of the labels, which start to look icky, and they seem dirty after a few refills. If I put them in the dishwasher, the labels are half off, half still stuck there and it looks terrible. So I think I'd rather have something with a little less label so it's easier to get it off and put a new one on when necessary.

I found some great jars at Target that are wide-mouth and have glass tops, but no shakers. Should I just suck it up and get the cute jars that have everything else I like and just keep 3-4 shakers around for the ones I shake instead of measure?

We got a bunch of glass jars at IKEA for our spices and part of DH's tea collection. They don't have the shaker top though, which I was quite worried about at first, but I either measure with a spoon or shake the open jar for stuff that I just eyeball.

We have these: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/40064702 They can sit on an angle as they show in the photo, so you can actually see what's inside. Our labels are just masking tape, cause that's what we did "temporarily" at first, and we haven't bothered to change them. In my ideal super-organized world I would get a label-maker for them, but this way it's easy to redo them if needed. These go in the dishwasher.

I was going to suggest the IKEA jars, but Ola beat me to it.

Though I mostly use small mason jars and write the contents with grease pencil or sharpie on top.

Edit: OLA, holy cow your spice drawer is nice. Puts my mess of a shelf to shame

Well this doesn't solve most of your problems but I use the jars from Penzey Spices and I write the name of the spice on top with paint pen. Because there is no label they are easy to clean and I can see what they are easily just by opening the drawer.

Ola, I'm in total spice drawer envy right now! That is TIGHT! I did see those in my search on Amazon too, and it's between the Target and those.... I think I may just have to get over the shaker issue. It's probably more important that the spoons fit at this point.... It's less annoying to sprinkle with my hand than to deal with spoons that don't fit when I need to measure!

Aww, thanks for the nice words. I have to say fitting measuring spoons in is a big benefit. With the store-bought spice jars I could only get the 1/4 tsp in and that got to be a pain as you can imagine.

Are the IKEA jars/lids truly airtight? They look pretty nice for the money!

Have you seen these at Crate and Barrel? They come on a rack, but it looks like you can buy them separately, too. In the description with the rack it says they come with a shaker top and are big enough for a measuring spoon.

I did want to add that I believe the lids of the IKEA jars are plastic. I wasn't sure if that was mentioned in the description on the website. It's like aluminum or metal-looking outside and white plastic on the inside. The actual jars are glass though.

They do seem airtight. I often shake my spices around (with the lid closed) so they're not clumped or anything, and I've never had anything come out or any indications that they weren't airtight. The bonus of storing them in a drawer or cabinet (as opposed to on the counter) is that they're protected from light too.

Same here. I think The Spice House also sells them. The owners of Penzeys and The Spice House are siblings.
