DS with Croup?? Need advice

HI There

It looks like my 19 month old DS might have Croup.
Saturday am he had a very low fever in the 100-101 range but no other syptoms
Sunday the tempfelt about the same, maybe a tiny bit higher but did not measure it as it stresses DS out and it didn't feel very high...he was definitely less happy (although he did play), whiny, and started having a sporadic mild cough which got more frequent as the afternoon progressed by the late afternoon early evening his voice was hoarse.

I put him to bed and he shortly after he started waking up upset and crying, by 8/9pm he was extremely upset and his voice was really hoarse and his breathing sounded like a seal and very congested. He was crying with a high pitch cry and really upset and it was hard to console him. He woke a couple more times and had coughing and seal sounding breathing especially after drinking water. It was a very rough night but he is ok this am.
He still has a slight temp on and off and sounds hoarse and is coughing a little bit. Although he does NOT sound like a seal when he does.
He is generally in a good mood and playing and had an apetite for breakfast.

We had talked to dr on call last night and he though it might be croup....
Also I went to a kiddy class on Tuesday and next to us sat a mom and tot who had had croup over the weekend and also a boy who's cough sounded croupy and horrible and was going to be taken to the dr later to be checked out- (don't get me started on parents who take sick kids to playgroups/classes without any regard for other kids-that's another post!!!)

Anyway,
It was a hard night without sleep for all and was hoping to get some advice from parents who've experienced this...
Does it sound like croup?
What made it better?
Any recommendations for homeopathics (we've been giving him Hepar sulphate) or anything else?

Should we take him to Er or urgent care today or ride it out til tomorrow and go to our ped?

WE are planning on touching base with the o call dr we spoke with last night.

Thanks for any help and support!!!!!-

DD had croup in March. I tried homepoathics,Vit C and she just kept getting worse. I took her into the the out ND and she sent me to the ER because RSV was going around. It was a hard situation I was scared she sounded awful and she was breathing funny. I'm not sure I would do it the same If she ever got it again. I think croup sounds worse than it is. I thought I would share my story. I can't tell you If it's croup for sure. Usually croup comes around in winter and spring that's why they always tell you If you feel like their having a hard time breathing go outside where it's cold or open the freezer. I'm sorry I'm not very much help

He's breathing ok...the scary part for me is when he coughs and the chest sounds congested and he has the horrible cry....It just happened a little while ago when he napped and after a while woke up upset crying....

Now that he is awake he is ok and playing and eating fruit.

The doc said just to monitor and bring him him tomorrow if he is the same or worse.......

He is not vaxed so I get VERY nervous.....

Anyway, sorry you had to go through that with your DD

DD isn't vaxed either. But to worry so much about that I know tons of vaxed kiddos that still get sick all the time. it's part of childhood to an extent kwim?

It sounds like he's doing ok though. DD would just lay on me and got 0 sleep 2 nights in a row because she was constantly coughing. She also had a higher fever than your LO around 103 mostly.

My ds had croup at 6 months old. We spent a lot of time outside(it was october) in the cool air. Also, sitting in a steamy bathroom worked to help his breathing. I ran a vaporizer in the room and used a natural vicks rub. Lots of breastmilk and vitamin C kept us from needing steroids. I never medicated the fever. I think the highest it went was 103.5.

Here is a good page about croup from Dr. Sears that helped me out a lot

Hope your lo gets better soon!

DD2 has had croup several times, she just had it again last month while on vacation, always great fun. She ended up in the hospital that time but we were away from all her meds, and she was struggling to even breathe, she has other health issues so when she gets ill, she often gets every ill. All of the other times I have just managed her at home, steaming up the bathroom and a humifider are great tools. Not vaxing doesn't matter with croup, it is just something that some children get, none of my others ever have, just always DD2.

Thanks for the replies!!!
It has been rough the last couple of days...
We took DS to dr yesterday and he was not breathing well. It was VERY scary

They had to give him albuterol but he was still breathing with his whole chest and had withdrawing??? I think it is called. Our dr sent us to ER thinking we might need an x-ray.
Luckily the dr at the er didn't think he needed one and that it was classic croup.

They did give him steroids there and a dose for today and tomorrow and ibuprofen.

I feel unhappy he has to take them but I think his trachea/vocal chord are very inflamed. I also dont like to give meds but he's been miserable and they said they wanted to make sure the fever didn't make the breathing harder still....

He had a MUCH better night last night and the cough now sounds more like an upper resp bug than croup.....I guess that's the normal course.
Today however he seemed pretty unhappy and sad. He is still very hoarse and still had the striding/withdrawing once in a while but not as much.
i think his throat still hurts when he coughs. He pretty much nursed and wanted to be on me all day.

I think steroids can really affect the mood as well-I know I am very sensitive to them ( ihad a severe allergic reaction once and had to take them)

Poor guy is also about to cut a canine...

Does this sound like the normal course for this?
He got the fever on Saturday and the cough/hoarseness on sunday so all together today is day day 5 since the first symptom and day 4 since cough appeared....

Hope is all better soon!
Thanks mamas for the support and info!!!!

Sorry- meant to say "Indrawing" instead of withdrawing when the area above the chest gets depressed as the child breathes....

DD had croup a couple of months ago and it is very scary. While it's true that it can sound worse than it really is, it can tend to progress quickly and I was told that if it gets to a point where you hear the rattling during breathing while at rest, they should go to the ER ASAP. We ended up getting the steroids too and while I was not happy about giving her those meds, she was having trouble breathing, wasn't eating or drinking (was desperately trying to get her to eat a few ice chips for meals just to keep her from getting dehydrated) and was absolutely miserable. It cleared up the very next day after getting her first dose of steroids and I was comfortable with that decision. I hope he feels better soon!
