What's Your Nighttime Combo?

We are currently using FB pockets with a MF insert and 1 or 2 hemp for at night. But I think our FB are starting to die. They have been leaking more and more and really, they just aren't my favorite diaper. I am committed to using them till they bite the dust, but we only have 6 of them and have been used for 1-1.5 year on my older son and probably 7 months on my younger so they have gotten good use. My requirements in a night time diaper are:

easy to put on, DH needs to be able to do it as long as the diaper is set up (like, a pocket that is stuffed or a stuffable fitted that he can pull a cover over)

stay dry inner, my older son wakes up other wise

economical

So, any thoughts?

My first question is when the fb leaks is the whole insert soaked? I have found with the fleece lined diapers that build up will make it so the insert is just wet but the diaper leaks. You can check this at the sink by dribbling some water on it and see if it soaks in right away or puddles for a little but before soaking in. I would try putting a drop of dish soap and scrubbing the liner and rinsing well then washing like normal and see how that goes. I think diapers should last longer than that honestly. I have pockets that are going on 3yrs old and are great still.

If that isn't it I would find some used Bum Genius diapers. Perferably ones that have been converted to snaps. They are very bullet proof for night time and I have noticed they are less picky about build up as well. That is what we have used for night time (and day time too for that matter) and still are like brand new (except I converted them to snaps).

Good luck, I have stuffed mine with either 2 microfiber inserts or 2 prefolds, or 1 toddler prefold. Never have leaks in them ever.

We use double stuffed BG 3.0's (both microfiber inserts that come with the diaper). Though DD is not a heavy wetter.

I agree about checking for build-up, repelling.

I love Fuzzi Bunz, BUT I have found that for us, they are not a good nighttime diaper. When you stuff them enough to make them nighttime ready, they tend to gap at the legs. In my experience, diapers/covers without gussets just leak at night, no matter what.

So, my 2 cents is, get thyself a nighttime diaper w/gussets. I've had good luck w/Thirsties covers over a one size too big prefold + hemp doubler. But for the ease of use for your DH, you might want to check out the Best Bottoms diaper. I had almost given up on cloth at night. But now I use a BB shell w/a hemp insert + overnight insert and I have found the nighttime cloth diapering love again. It's all we use at night now.

I think a big part of the problem is that if we stuff enough the legs gap and if we don't stuff enough they leak anyway. I just stripped them a month ago and the whole insert is wet so I don't think repelling or build up is an issue. We can't use BG because the micro-suede and my kid's skin doesn't work well. Those Best Bottoms look like they might work.. I was also going to look at the GAD fleece pockets? And maybe the Drybees?

We use the GAD fleece pocket. It's a one size fitted that you secure with a snappie. We stuff it with a Joey Bunz and put a Dancing Bears fleece cover over top. We haven't had a leak yet with this system. We had been using BumGenius 3.0s, double stuffed, but they started leaking occasionally and then consistently. The Dancing Bears fleece cover is bulky, but we just put DS in a t-shirt with no PJ pants.

We have dancing bears covers that I love, they are awesome, but DH can't work a snappi to save his life..

We use a Baby Beehinds bamboo fitted with a fleece cover or wool soaker. DD isn't a hugely heavy wetter though.
DS was such a heavy wetter than I never found anything that worked other than sposies for overnight.

Depending on my mood, I have found 2 things that work. DD is a medium wetter.

1) orange edge Diaper Rite unbleached PF, bikini twisted under an unsnapped Wonder Wrap

2) any new pocket (tight elastic, pristine PUL & good fit) with a big fluffy microfiber insert on top and a stuffins or joeybunz below that.

I LOVE Piddle Poodle Cadillac diapers. They are perfect for night time. The only time my son leaked was when I didn't get it on right around the thighs because he was so squirmy.

We put a wool cover over it though, just in case! I'm experimenting with a stay dry liner. To me, the bamboo fleece felt dry in the morning, but I'm not in the diaper all night like him and he hates feeling wet. I'm going to see if he sleeps better tonight.

My son is a medium wetter.

We use Happy Hempys with the stay-dry inner. For my heavy wetter they have to be super-stuffed (2 tri-folded PFs and a heavy hemp doubler folded into his wet zone). I have to make sure I get it on tight enough to avoid the leg leaks (which usually means fastening it twice), and I cover it either with a Mommy's Touch OS cover or a Babyology wool cover (in the next size up).

But it's the only thing that has been able to both get us through the night and contain the occasional night-time poo. The S'bish magic dipe can get us through the night (barely), but my guy's legs are too skinny for it to contain poo.

The happy hempy pocket looks like it might work really well with a good cover over it... hmmm, lots to think about!

In general, do you guys think a fitted + cover or a pocket would be better?

I'm having a similar problem with my daughter's kushies CDs. ONLY at night and it's almost always near her waist. We've tried placing one liner between the legs and adding another cloth liner, folded, near her belly. She's still soaked in the morning.

I'd welcome any advice.
