Anyone else think this is a good or a bad idea? I am torn. The local fair is in town and I would love to go but not sure if taking my daughter would be a great idea. Any thoughts pls? TIA

I vaguely remember going to one in high school...it was REALLY loud and very smoky. Those two factor would concern me with a little one. However, if you'll be far enough away that it won't be louder than, say, a very loud vacuum cleaner and if you have enough distance to escape the smoke and fumes then I'm all for it. I think babies grow leaps and bounds with every new experience as they drink up the new sensations of each new environment. But, "safety first"!

you must live very close to my family...we are visiting them this week and they went to the demo derby tonight at the fair. My cousin was racing/crashing in it...lol. I have a 3 yr old and thought it would be too loud for her so I definitely wouldn't take a 10 mo old. Just my opinion. Did you go? Who won? My family isn't home yet...lol.

We have run demo derbies several times. They are loud smoky and smelly but then I am always right in the action. That said, I agree with above.

We had to skip the tractor pulls last year. We are hoping to take DS who will be 21 mos by then. I figure I will get the soft moldable ear plugs. That might be an option for you. I am a little worried about the dust though. That is somthing else with the derby, if they do not wet down the track it can be very dusty! I am not sure how much of a worry that is for you. Could the dust hurt them if they breathe it in?

We took our son to a demolition event last yr, he was 3 then and it was way too loud for his ears, it was too loud for mine too. We bought him some headphone type things that block out the sound that they were selling and those really helped. He wasn't enjoying it prior to that. We noticed that most of the younger kids had them on.
If you do go I'd suggest getting a pair of those.
The smell is pretty overwhelming too.

Haha wow that is weird I actually grew up in philly (saw you posted your from NE Philly lol)

I actually just took her to the fair and watched some of the derby from far away. I am used to the derby's where they wet the ground first but they didn't do it this time, so I didn't want to get close. But had fun either way, she enjoyed the clowns, music, and animals.

I'm an audiologist (hearing specialist) and it is way too loud unless you think you can keep earplugs in their ears. The soft moldable silicone ones are fine & what we've used with my 4 y-o to go to the Monster Truck rallies. The rule is that the plugs stay in or we leave. We've been the last two years and he loves it. If you get the big headphone kind just make sure they'll stay over their ears- those things are often huge on little heads and may not stay on well enough to protect little ears. Thing is, sounds that are loud to your adult ears are much louder to little baby ears because they're smaller- More potential for damage. But just be cautious and take frequent breaks. No reason not to enjoy the show.

I don't know about dust.
