My youngest DD (5 yr old) has an intake appointment at a mental health clinic tomorrow. We got a referral from our doctor to go there. I am nervous and unsure what to expect. The doctor says she has a cognitive disorder but not sure which one.
They only do mental health diagnosis and not developmental so we are going to send her for a developmental evaluation as soon as we can (having the hardest time finding anyone). Her school IEP says she has severe developmental delays and sensory processing disorder. They suspected aspergers and so did I. However, lately it has gotten worse and she has added on new symptoms like extreme fear, OCD like behavior, seeing bugs everywhere when there isn't any (she thinks they are crawling on her), hurting herself and others, etc. It is scary. She will go from being happy and calm to angry and violent back to calm in just minutes. Why the school and I both suspected Aspergers was her physical clumsiness, her lack of social skills, her high IQ, her good vocabulary, her spaciness, her eyes not focusing (hard time looking people in the eyes), her short attention span, her delays developmentally (can't feed herself some foods, still has accidents, can't get herself dressed, etc), her lack of safety, etc.
I just don't know. Anyone deal with this? What should I expect out of an mental health intake appointment? Thanks!

It was a little unsettling to me when I did mine for my DD1. Our clinic held the intake appointments all in the locked facility but my DD1 would have all appointments in another center. It was unnerving to get buzzed into a place with warning signs, I had received permission to bring my 3 week old so that was probably part of it since I had him with me. The waiting room had people dropping off clothes, etc.. for patients.
