Any tips for cutting your own hair short? What style is easy to cut/care?

HI,
My hair is long and curly from a perm last year right now and I want to cut it shoulder or above sh length. I've been researching info on cutting own hair and most of them are for cutting long hair to trim or cut but still reserve the long length. I see I can do pony tail and chop off some but I want to know how to make sure that they are even left and right when the total length is above the shoulder length.
Also anyone have any suggestion what hairstyle is easy to cut and style for?
It is hot here and my baby is constantly pulling my hair esp. when he is behind me in a mei tai.
TIA

My mom used to do her own shags and they were cute.

Here's the guide I use to cut my own hair. http://community.livejournal.com/feyeselftrim My hair is long, but I think it should work for shoulder length, too. I think the minimum length for this technique to work is the length you can still put all your hair into ponytail, which should be around shoulder length for most people. I wouldn't want to go shorter than a "ponytail-able" length in summer anyway. It's much cooler to tied it up than having it drape all over your face and neck.

I've trimmed my own hair 4 times now and each time it's quite even and nice. If your hair is curly, a bit unevenness is not going to be noticeable.

Do you have anyone who you can trade hair cuts with? Cutting your own hair is hard, but my sister and I give each other cuts, color, etc. My hair was to mid-back over a year ago and I put it in a pony tail, cut it off at about bob-length, got the sides/front the way I wanted it and my friend evened it all up for me.

I had my sister cut my hair straight across last friday, but it's too thick, it didn't work well. I was waiting for my paycheck to get it fixed. After reading this article, I looked up some stuff on youtube, and tried it. Much better now and incredibly easy!

I'm the "wash and wear" type, and this is going to be super easy to care for.

I did the ponytail haircut for years and loved it. It is super easy, though I do recommend having very sharp scissors for a nice smooth cut. I once used my kitchen scissors and had a messy, scraggly cut.

I used to cut mine twice. Once with the ponytail very high on my head and then again with the ponytail closer to my forehead. I got a nice layering of hair around my face that suited my round head.

Nowadays, I pay for a cut simply because it is one of my few outings that I do that is entirely for me. No kids, no hubby, just a couple of hours of time alone.
