Could this be chicken pox?

My MIL thinks ds has cp, but I'm not so sure. (MIL has 2 kids who had co, and was a pediatric nurse a long time ago, but has been wrong about other kids' health stuff).

DS1, 5yo, spent the night with the IL's Wed night. He woke up itchy in the middle of the night. He had/has about 8-10 bumps. Today is Monday, the bumps are still about the same.

He never had a fever or felt sick at all. The bumps only itch at night/bedtime (every night). The itching is fixed with baking soda in water. (Ds is a bit dramatic about discomfort, so we would def. know if he itched during the day).

The bumps look like bug bites or pimples. There are no blisters, and never were. The closest thing is that one bump looks like a pimple with a tiny white head, but you have to look really closely to see it. A few of the bumps seem to be fading and getting smaller- no crusting over like I've read happens with cp.

Basically, he has none of the usual symptoms of CP. lol. But MIL said she thinks it is. Could it be?

And if not, could it be another virus? I'm wondering if it could have anything to do with the detergent on MIL's sheets maybe?

If it where cp then the bumps would turn into blisters usually in 24 hours time or so. If they havnt done that then odds are they are bug bites maybe flea.

I was pretty convinced they were bug bites last night, but today he has teeny bumps ALL OVER his torso, front and back. His cheeks are red and rashy too.
So now I'm thinking it is viral, but still not sure it's CP. Any ideas what it could be? I'm going to google and see what I can come up with.

Should I take him to the dr? He feels fine, and the bumps didn't itch last night.

Sounds viral to me from your description. Still no Blisters?

When my middle dd got the CP she had 1 spot that was a pimple. It took 7 days for it to break & crust over. Then she started her full case of CP.

It could be a mild form of CP, it could be anything else too.

still no blisters. hmmm...
We're taking him to the doctor. I'm not really concerned, I just want to know if/how long we should keep him away from other kids. He misses playing with his friends!

Any update? My DS has this too, I thought they were sand fleabites but they are spreading. He supposedly had CP last year.

I did take him to the doctor, and even the doctor didn't know for sure what it was. He said the big bumps looked like bug bites, and the teeny bumps/rash could be a virus or eczema, he didn't know for sure. He said it didn't look like CP at all.

The rash was gone the next day, and the bigger bumps have diminished, no crusting over, and haven't itched since- so I'm really thinking not CP. (My MIL still disagrees with the doc, even though he didn't have any other symptoms of CP. She says the bumps did have blisters on them- didn't look like it to me )

glad to hear that! It's annoying when these types of things pop up, and we never really have any answers about it. lol
