I am a FTM and my daughter is just a little over 3 weeks old. I have talked to a LC and we have determined I have a forceful let down and an oversupply of milk. I unlatch daughter at letdown and nurse in a reclined position. That helps with the choking/gagging. I nurse on one side each feeding to make sure she gets the hindmilk as well.
Lately though, daughter will sometimes start crying like she is upset or in pain at the end of a feeding. I will try to burp her (sometimes successful, sometimes unsuccessful), then I will try to reattach her (I am nursing only on one side each feeding). Then, I will try to offer her the other breast. None of this seems to satisfy her. I will swaddle her and soothe her, and then she seems perfectly content or goes to sleep. It happens at random times, and does not follow any specific patterns. She doesn't show any signs of hunger after either.
What could be going on? It breaks my heart to watch her cry!!! Breastfeeding is hard!

Hang in there, it will get easier.
Babies have immature digestive tracts, and sometimes gas (normal to have some, even with breastfeeding) can be painful to pass through the intestines. What helped us was to be carried around in the Moby- if he was crying and nursing couldn't help, I changed him and stuck him in, head next to my heart. It worked 9 times out of 10.
