Mildew on Wagon

I have an awesome little wagon that I pull my 3yo & 18mo around in. It has a metal bottom & wood paneled sides (all around). I live in a very damp area & I have noticed mildew growing on the wood. (I've been storing it in the garage). It's quite scant, but definitely appearing.

Any tips on how to treat it?? I LOVE this wagon & we use it a lot. Would it help to paint the wood? Can I just paint over the mildew?

Don't just paint over it. Wash, then paint.

ETA: Before you paint, apply a mildew-resistant primer. Here in the U.S. we have the Kilz brand.
