Problems with the Pooper

So, DD has always been one of those every 7-10 day EBF poopers. Which was great! The problem now is that she's started solids and is still only pooping every few days (sometimes as long as a week between poops) and when she goes she seems to be really uncomfortable (never a problem when EBF). The first poop is usually pretty hard, so it appears that she's constipated.

We avoid constipating foods (though she did eat a whole banana earlier this week. sigh) and give her fruits like peaches, pears, plums, etc. that should help with constipation along with fiber-y veggies and oatmeal. We've also been offering water.

Any ideas? We have a pedi well visit today and I'll ask the doc, but would love your input as well.

She's 6.5 months.

It sounds like she's constipated if the poops are hard.

Maybe if you mix everything with breastmilk and slow down with the solids and stop all grains.
Mine were not ready for solids until about 9 months.

not a lot to offer here... my DS has always been a once a day pooper. Starting solids, there were days the first would be a hard nugget, and then a few hours later.... POOOOOOP. Even though he was still pooping every day, and never seemed in 'pain' by the constipation, it was still evident.

In the first few weeks, we calmed down the solids (cut out bananas) and incorporated prunes, as recommended by our pedi. DS loved prunes, so it was win win. Now at almost 10months, it rarely happens... and when it does, normally is the same stuff that makes adults constipated - cheese (even tho for him it might've only been two bites) or rice (again, only a few bites for him... but it's enough to make a difference).

Sounds like you need to take things nice and slow; keep heavy on the BM.

This was my son to the tee. This is what we did.

First, we also stopped feeding all starchy veggies like, sweet potato, squash, carrots or anything orange and stuck with mostly green veggies. Most fruits except bananas and apple sauce are fine.

Second, we started giving him baby probiotics and pureed prunes daily. The prunes I would re-constitute in hot water for like 10-15 minutes and then I would blend them with the added water. I add them to avocado or oatmeal or anything else you want.

I'm not sure if it is the probiotics or the prunes or both, but that really seemed to do the trick.
We have now been able to add back the starchy foods and he poops daily or every other day at the worst, but never hard.

It tool several weeks for this routine to REALLY make him regular. Hope it helps your little one.
