HS'ng for the summer... see where it goes :-)

Not sure where to start, so here goes... I work part-time & DH is unemployed. DSD(7) is on her way into 2nd grade. DS(6) & DSS(5) are going into first grade. We are trying to do a lot of learning through the summer & if it goes well, we may keep some or all of them home, if they want to.

I am really looking for ideas of activities for them to do together & resourses that I can use to "teach" them things. I really don't think a curriculum would be a good fit for us, but I want concepts & real world applications.

Zoe is an awesome reader! She is reading the Boxcar Children books now & can read silently (YAY!!!). Her memory is amazing & so is her comprehension!! She has adding down pat, but subtraction & any kind of word problem get her teary & frustrated. She is interested in travel & being busy all the time.

Revi is my math wiz! He can figure out any kind of problem I give him, up to multiplication & pre-algebra. He is a very good reader, but lacks confidence. When he reads, he guesses what the word is by the first letter or spends 3 minutes making each letter sound in the word, but doesn't put them together into a word. He doesn't believe that he DOES know every word in the book, until he is so upset when he finally gets the word that he is mad that he does know it, LOL! He is interested in everything... geography, science, aviation, animals, cars, the list goes on.

Xander is so sweet & wants to please everyone. He reads at a kindergaten level & even higher when he is not "trying" to read (signs, brand names, product packaging, etc), but will just skip over or make up words in a Dr Suess book, and stays on rythym, so if I am not paying attention, I don't realize it. His math skills are pretty basic, but he is learning at a good pace and is willing to learn new things all the time!!

I guess what I am asking for is some insight & advice from Mommas with kids like mine & also some good websites for me & them. I would love to find a website or math game that challenges them & learns what they need help with instead of just working on adding or subtraction. It seems that they are geared toward the PS style of teaching. GRRR! Any better reading sites than Starfall?

I'll stop rambling now. Thanks for reading!!

There's a good free resources list at the top of this forum.

Sounds like your observing their learning styles pretty well. I would take the time and write down ideas to help you pick out whatever you choose to expose them to.

I would start out slow and just have fun with it. They are already reading and they will refine their skills as they move along. Maybe some games and puzzles for math. I wouldn't jump into "work" during the summer either.
