Letting it mellow but....

it's getting gross.

In an effort to conserve water we have been sticking to the old, "if it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down" but I can't seem to get the smell of nasty old pee out of the toilet and it's challenging my committment to water conservation.

Anyone know of anything I could use to neutralize the smell?

water.

seriously...we practice letting it mellow, but thats just because I make sure we all drink lots of water. Lots of water usually means not so smelly pee. My DH is the worst about it and if he's got a particularly dark, stinky pee, I flush it.

The other thing we use is cleaning products that are orange oil based. They are VERY strong in terms of smell killing.

Vinegar is great for breaking down uric acid. You can add some TTO to yours for an extra disinfectant spray if you like, but spraying a few times in between cleanings should help the odor

We just got a new house, and all the toilets only use 1.6 gallons to flush. I'm not so militant about not flushing pee now. I always hated that smell too

Yeah, Dh is definitley the worst offender on the dehydration front!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to make up a batch of tto and vinegar now!

We use Borax! A 1/4 cup keeps the toilet fresher. My dh's is really dark, dark so he usually flushes (the joys of drinking Coca-Cola 24/7).

I "let it mellow" as well. My problem is not stinky pee so much as the mildew-y buildup that gets onto the toilet bowl. We used to use those bleach dropins, but I have banned them. Is there any alternative to those? Or do I just have to keep scrubbing more often?

I've really found that the Borax helps with that slimey buildup. A box lasts quite awhile for us.

We do a tiny "flush." We keep a container in the sink to catch the hand-washing water when we wash our hands after and then pour it into the toilet bowl. A bit of the toilet water drains out by the pour, although it isn't enough to get down the toilet paper, etc. It is enough to dilute the mellowing yellow though so that it doesn't smell as strong. Only problem with this is that my DH isn't the greatest on hand-washing and it is often smelly after he pees. Says he doesn't really need to if it's just a pee which is just a bit gross.

We dont flush every time we go pee either. I have found that using the really strong (I think it 33%) H2O2 boils the toilet clean. I do this every few days.

I have terrible ms right now and cant stand the smell of urine to I am very good at keeping the toilet clean:LOL

i keep essential lemon oil by the loo and drop a few drops in every so often. Maybe tea tree oil would kill the scent too... unfortunately, my hubby thinks letting pee sit is gross so he's always flushing.... but i agree let it sit!

this is what we do (but minus the wispy paper floating around as we use cloth wipes:LOL the wispy paper swimming around would make me want to flush too much!

I also use a GREAT cleaner (made locally by a mom who owns a store making cleaners and perfumes with juices, oils, and herbs from her own garden ) her mildew/deep cleaners smell so awesome (I am using fruit loopz now, smells so fruity yummy) and really clean the toilet 9and the oven, and freshen diapers in the wash, etc)

maybe she ships????

I have considered starting a business like that! However, in my area most people don't even know what Organic means. :
