I am also not someone that wants to be yapped at right away.

I also like the idea of starting out with a later bedtime (for us that might be 8) and moving it back if they can't get up.
I moved bedtime to later because Dylan wasn't going to sleep at 8 pm. He was playing until 9 pm. It seemed cruel to make him stay in a dark room when he wasn't tired but was wide awake listening to us in the next room. So the deal is that he can go to bed later but must still get up in the morning.

DS's school starts at 8:30. The bus usually arrives somewhere between 8:05 and 8:10, and the stop is three houses down from us, so only takes about 30 seconds to get there. I would usually get up at 7:30 and start getting DS up at the same time. All he had to do was get dressed, brush teeth, and eat breakfast. All I had to do was make coffee(lol) and pack his lunch. So we really didn't need that much time, and both of us were usually reluctant to get up anyway.

I would try to get him into bed at 8:30, sometimes a little earlier if I could manage.

DS has never had a problem with falling asleep *immediately*. His bedtime last year was 8-8:30 (absolute LATEST 8:30 getting into bed) Never had a problem really with getting up either.

The appropriate bedtime will largely depend on your kid and his sleep needs. But I will warn you that he may need a really really early bedtime at first and then you can slowly move it to a bedtime that will work for the whole school year. My son found those first weeks of school just exhausting. At one point we moved his bedtime all the way back to 7pm and then slowly moved it to 8pm where it has stayed the last two years.

My son had to be on the bus at 7:15 last year. So we got up at 6am. He ate breakfast and dressed while I showered and dressed (I left for work as soon as he was on the bus). We tried to get all his stuff rounded up the night before but were inevitably rounding stuff up in the morning and getting us all out the door. The hours and fifteen minutes worked for us for the most part. He was not allowed to watch TV in the morning at all or we wouldn't make it.

OT--Jolly, where are you? I'm in SF,

On topic---I think I am going to go with a little later wake up, and absolutely NO TV for him. And an earlier wake up for ME than him.

And yes, I can see where the first few weeks he'll be more tired. He's used to half days at preschool that didn't start till 9. He will now be in school 8-3:15.
