missing work when kids are sick and other questions and vents

I have to work at least part time to pay my share of my bills. I am also a college and almost nursing student and mom of 2 very little girls. I just started a new job and was originally hired for 22.5 hours per week (which is 2 days per week plus every other weekend). I accepted 30 hours thinking I could do it. My kids both got sick this week and I was sick once too. I also have bi-polar disorder. I just started my job 3 weeks ago and I am really in over my head. I work 3-11 and I love the shift, but its killing me and the kids. my 3 year old is having the hardest adjustment. Should I just go in and be honest that the schedule is way too much for me? I already told the schedule coordinator it was too much and wanted to drop to 22.5 but she had already made the schedule out for the month. I need relief, NOW. I dont want to quit, but I think something like 15 hours a week might be better and I think at that point they would just ask me to go per diem. UGH Meanwhile my 3 year old has an ear infection and strep and the baby had an ear infection/roseola. My poor kids.

I would try talking to the coordinator again. Can she have someone else cover your extra hours? Are you close enough to any of your co-workers that you could ask them to pick up the other hours? Lots of people, esp. in this economy, like picking up a little extra over time. I hope it all works out soon.

see if any co-workers want extra shifts... Also I don't know what kind of work you do but could you possibly work from home some days? Especially when the kids are sick... I would totally tell them the 30 hours is just too much...

i'm a CNA, so working from home isn't possible. I did get a number of a coworker who said she would happily take a shift or two if it got unmanageable. I think once I go down to 22.5 hours and have no classes (this fall), it will seem much easier.

When and if I get accepted into the nursing program for January, I will worry about going per diem.

I am definately going to look into finding a few replacements for a few of my shifts this month.

Thanks ladies.
