and how do I get rid of them? They were here last year, we blocked their tunnels, and they came back this year. They dig tunnels under our front concrete steps. They are very aggressive and bombard people who come to the front door. I do not know if they sting. Even if they do not sting, they are undermining the concrete by digging so many tunnels. Our porch is starting to sink on the side they are tunneling. A photo from last - year not sure they are close-up enough to see...We thought they were 'pretty'
. This year they will not let me get close enough to take a photo.

We have many typical wasps around our house and we knock down their nests constantly. They are very aggressive and both of my children have been stung.
We leave carpenter bees and all other bees alone as they do not bother us.
TIA
ok...I've done a little searching and believe they are Great Black Wasps or Blue-Winged Flower Wasps. According to what I've read they normally are not aggressive and rarely sting but can cause damage. The excessive heat might be making them more active and making them bombard us as we use our front door. Plus during certain times they hover in groups over shrubs which is what they might be doing next to our porch. They have the longest dangling legs when they fly. They dig the tunnels to lay their eggs. I believe they are beneficial in pollination. We'll be leaving them alone.
