Question about infant ec...

Hi everyone, I ec'd my 1st, but not until about 6 months. I now have an 11 day old boy and I'm having trouble finding a good potty. Should I get the top hat-looking potty? What did you use for this early stage?

The baby bjorn is way too large--cumbersome to hold while nursing (he usually starts mid-nursing and then finishes afterward), and just too wide for his little hips. I've tried smaller tupperware and have caught most poos, but I can't seem to find a receptacle that's narrow enough to fit below his bottom while nursing, narrow enough to fit between my legs, and long/oblong enough to catch pee while juggling baby, pointing penis, etc.... teehee

thanks for your help!

I started at 5 weeks, but an old disposable 'wipes' box as perfect for us. Narrow enough to fit between my legs, wide enough to catch poos, and long enough to catch my DS's pees-for the most part. Occasionally I had to 'point it down' so the stream wouldn't leap over the far end.

Those little top hat things looked cool, but I never ended up getting one even though I did want one.

Maxine LOVES her blue bowl (the top hat potty). We've used it since day 1. But, if we don't have her plopped on right, even she can squirt over the rim. So I imagine it might be difficult to help a boy aim in. But for tiny newborn bums, it really helps because the rim is wide enough to offer support. Max doesn't like a plastic/glass tupperware because there's no place for her to sit and relax. At almost 5 months, she still uses it just fine, although she is just getting big enough to straddle the bblp. It's pretty cheap, so it may be worth it to get just to try and use it for however long he's comfy on it. I never nursed and pottied simultaneously--I was having enough trouble juggling the awkwardness of breastfeeding and she quickly settled into eliminating after eating.

i had a potty bowl (the red top hat or flower pot as we called it) it worked very well for dd and fit great in the diaper bag so that was handy. We also used the bblp when she was not nursing. I would set the potty on the changing table or bathroom counter and hold dd under her arm pits making sure that she was scooted all the way to the front of the potty, it worked well for us strting at 8 days and she isn't a big kiddo.

I used the little top hat potties with DD2 and really liked them, especially for the quick middle of the night potties. I'm using them with DS2, but have to be really careful to keep his penis pointing down in there or he sprays everywhere. I'll keep using them, just because I already have them, but they worked a lot better with a girl (for me, at least).

thanks for all the great help and suggestions everyone....

@ riboflavin--your wipes idea worked for us....I didn't still have one of those around but I sent my partner out for something of that size and he came back with a ziploc tupperware just larger than that. it works very well...

I'm SOO surprised at how quickly he picked it up. I started this at 11 days as I mentioned, and at 12 days, he started holding his poo until after he nursed and even until I held him in position over the potty (I hold his body against my chest and his little butt bones and he dangles his feet--sometimes they get peed on). Pee's getting better but usually I miss... Pretty amazed nonetheless...

We use the bjorn potty chair for EC'ing our daughter (now 21 months) and removed the insert to use for our newborn (now almost 7 weeks). The bojrn little potty is great for when they're sitting (the chair is too high for little potty-ers), but having both seems to work great as a 3-step.

This idea is brilliant. Our Bjorn potty is definitely too big and the bottom cuts into my legs when I hold it, but a rectangular wipes box should fit just fine.

I used the bathroom sink at that age. Just washed it out after each time.

I used a large yogurt container with duck tape around the top to soften the edge.
