Crib as Co-Sleeper?

We just purchased a crib and last night set it up next to our mattress. It sits very nicely next to it but there are some things I'm wondering/worrying about.

Nursing was okay on one side but the other side was more difficult - has anyone else had a similar sleeping arrangement and if so how did you manage nighttime nursing?

Also, there is a VERY small space in between the crib mattress and our mattress, not even half an inch but there none the less - is their anything I can use to put between the two and should I be worried about the space? TIA!

I nurse on one side with his head at one end of the crib, and for the other side I flip him over so our heads are at the foot of the crib...then I just let him sleep like that until the next time. Otherwise, I will flip him over to the other side of me into our bed to nurse on the other side.

I made a cover for a chunk of foam that I wedged on the far side of the crib mattress to push it up tight against our mattress. Our gap was more like 4 inches, though.

we have a sidecarred crib too. We put some foam wrapped in a sheet like thing in the space.I don't do side lying nursing though.
