Make shift rail fence quilt

I have 4 different fabrics, each a yard, that I know my mom would love and I'm thinking of making her a quilt. I don't want to buy more fabric and I've been unable to find a pattern for exactly the fabric I have. Most rail fence squares have 3 strips, but I'd love to do 4 instead.

So... how hard can it be? Do you make each set of strips exactly the same (with the fabrics in the same order)? Or do you mix them up with the exception of the one piece that's going to be running?

Help me figure out the logistics.

Okay, this is easier than it looks!

Cut really looooong strips, say, 2.5 inches wide and the whole yard long. Do this in all 4 colors.

Pick one strip in each color, and sew all 4 strips together. Press your seams toward the darker sides.

THEN you take a wheelie fabric pizza cutter and whack them every, say, 11 inches or so, and you've got your blocks! You could also use scissors.

When I started quilting, I used to be overwhelmed at things because I thought I'd have to cut each and every strip and sew them all together. Not so! Stack and whack!!

Then the fun part is you get to arrange the blocks however you want to create all sorts of designs.
