When to ditch nighttime diapers?

My DS is nearly 16 mos., and we started EC'ing him pretty much right from birth. We essentially stopped using daytime diapers at 12 months. There are accidents here and there, for sure. But it goes pretty well, all things considered, and I will definitely EC my next baby.

I've noticed that the past several weeks, when we get up in the morning, his diaper seems to be completely dry. It is hot, so I thought tonight we'd try just putting him in his undies for the night to see what happens. We co-sleep and he nurses t/o the night, which makes it even more surprising to me that he doesn't wet his diaper, instead holding it 10-12 hours until the morning to pee in the potty! Impressive, I must say. He never wears a diaper during his naps, which can span 3 hours, and there have never been any nap-time accidents. I remain a little hesitant though about night-time. So when do you all generally take the leap and stop using night-time diapers (if you used them at all)?

Our DD is 20 months and we only part-time EC'ed with her, but right from the beginning. She stopped wearing daytime diapers at about 15 months (after she started walking). I noticed the same thing - her nighttime diaper was dry here and there at first, then more consistently. I took the leap about 2 weeks ago and she's been dry all night ever since. I've been offering the potty when she wakes up to nurse at 4am, but she only wants it about half the time. She does want to pee as soon as she wakes up...

Caterina -- that is impressive! Congrats on your EC success. Well, last night my DS only wore undies to bed, and as he became more and more restless toward morning, I took him into the bathroom to pee around 6 am. Then he went back to bed for a few hours more. Upon waking at 9, he had a big pee and poo, as usual, in the toilet. No wetting the bed!! I hope this wasn't a fluke, as I look forward to the end of diapers altogether, and this might just be it!! Woo-hoo....

That's great!!!!! My dd (27 months) has been dry at night for quite awhile. 6 months maybe? She has always tended to pee if she's NOT in a dipe, though! So I put a "night night diaper" on her most nights and it stays dry. Every so often she'll tell me she doesn't want a night-night diaper, and I remind her not to pee in the bed, and she sleeps on a fleece blanket. That has been working, actually!

Isn't it amazing to follow the lead of our little ones when they are ready? I hope it wasn't a fluke last night, but also there will surely be accidents along the way... hrsmom reminded me that my DD sleeps on a large wool felt pad. So if she does pee I don't have to change the mattress pad etc., but just change the sheet on top. I also have a thick fleece on one side, flannel on the other blanket (a small square) that I can lay over the pee spot and change the sheets in the morning. When she co-slept with us, she slept on the same wool pad with a large flannel receiving blanket over the top. I loved it for its breast milk absorbing qualities, and it protected our sheets if her diaper leaked. I wonder if she'll still be sleeping on it for years to come!

Awesome -- second night without diapers, and again, no accidents! WOO-HOO!

About protecting the bed, we have a few waterproof pads that are about 2.5 feet square. I've laid him on these to sleep since the beginning, and their biggest benefit has been protecting our bed from his spit ups, actually. Even now he will occasionally puke in bed and I'm so glad I've kept him on these pads for that reason. I don't think he has EVER peed in the bed during naptime.
