fact or fiction? kinda embarrassing / silly

so my dd was told this story (first person follows): "I was on my boat (in Atlantic Canada) and one day at sunset I saw an octopus climbing up the side of the boat. It sprayed some gunk on the boat! And when the octopus left, I collected the gunk, and here it is, in this jar!" (smells like seawater, colored purplish)

So now we are both obsessed whether this is potentially true, and we've done some research on octopuses (fascinating!) and yet I can't still figure out whether it is possible to collect the ink this way, even if it is very mucousy.

DD asked this person repeatedly whether the story was a scientific fact or just a story, and she was told it was a fact--but the whole context is of story telling, fables and fulling around, so it is hard to know for sure.

Today is the last day I can ask this person myself. But it is embarrassing as DD WAS told it was a fact, so now it would look like I don't trust this person!

Anyone has any experience with octopus gunk?

Well, they do squirt ink to give themselves a chance to get away from danger. Kind of like a smokescreen in spy movies But I have no idea if it would stick to the side of a boat and be able to be collected. Hmmmm, I'd ask!

Well I know that's possible with squid because I've been squid jigging(I'm from Atlantic Canada) and they stick on and climb and squirt massive amounts of very stingy ink...octopus are similar...but I've never even seen an octopus...maybe it was even really a squid..if you didn't know squid you would think it was a small octopus.

Cool! Thanks! So it would remain on the surface of a boat, like gunk?

I'd ask the storyteller, "where'd you come up with THAT story? DD loved it!" See how the storyteller reacts.

Oh God yeah, and it's a significant amount too...it goes flying through the air. It will stain too and it stings on your skin. When we would go they would be in a huge school and they'd stick on the boat and lines and your rubber gloves..crazy but fun!

My friend and I made a lot of money doing that one summer..we would row in her father's boat..or collect them on the beach when they came ashore. Fascinating creatures.

some people use the ink to make art - i think it was an ancient practice but there was a lady that lives in my vicinity who would harvest octopus ink for painting. that does not answer your question though...

I am so finding one of those. Add it to our collection of odd and interesting stuffed things that can migrate around the house popping up in unusual places. Hehe, the mothman was watching me brush my teeth this morning.

Thanks, mamas! DD and I learned so much about octopuses in the last couple of days. I knew the ink was used in foods, but didn't know about art. Fascinating!

Now, we asked the person. She said it was purple, and she is not 100% positive it was an octopus, says it could have been a squid, but it didn't sting.

I've seen these! I plan on making one for my good friend, he's a Lovecraft fanatic. He's even doing a reading of a Lovecraft work for a podcast called HP Podcraft or something along those lines, and providing background music for them to use.
