CDing w/ LO in childcare?

Has anyone done a mix of cd'ing and disposies? I'll be going back to work while LO is still in diapers. I've cd'ed my other children and would like to with this one as well, but the childcare provider doesn't "do" CDs. I'm trying to work out if it will be cost-effective at all to cd since the LO will spend a good amount of time in disposies. I'm a teacher so that's 187 days in childcare and the rest of the year with mama... any know how that might work out?

would they be willing to sort of compromise and do disposable inserts? several CD brands offer a system with either cloth or sposie inserts - Flip, Grovia, gDiapers . . .

FWIW though, if you are good at couponing (especially mixing manufacture's coupons with store deals/coupons) you can do sposie diapering pretty inexpensively if you aren't super brand loyal. We started off this way, and just a couple weeks ago switched to cloth, because we were running low on DS's size in our mondo diaper stash, and hadn't bought any the next size up and didn't want to spend the $$ on more sposies if we could do cloth.

Just a thought.

I do some sposies and some CDs. If you're not going to do it full time you can get a smaller stash and you save on sposies by using fewer of them too. So instead of getting 36 PFs & 6 covers + nighttime dipes and wool covers, you could get 12 AIOs, 3 night dipes and 1 wool cover or whatever combination suits you. You don't have to worry about having enough between while they're in the wash because you'd only be washing the weekend dipes on the monday and using sposies the rest of the week. I would put the night ones in with the regular laundry if they've not been pooped on [dirty slattern emoticon] but that's just me.

alfabetsop, Well d'oh! I don't know why it doesn't occur to me that I can use a half-stash. Probably because I love all the cute styles I am pretty good about finding bargains online and using coupons, so this might be doable. If I set myself a budget for a mini-stash and get one-size cds, that might actually be do-able -- I still have some new Thirsties inserts that I overbought with last LO, so that's one less thing to get.

akind1, I know gDiapers but not the others. I will have to check into those and see. I just did pocket dipes (daytime) and staccinators (nighttime) with my last one, which worked out fine for us. Just need to think about the cost effectiveness of this.

happy baby company sells all of them, I think. You can usually find good deals on all of them. a flip day pack is 2 covers, 6 cloth inserts for $50. and the easier to find gdiaper sposie inserts work in them.

On the childcare provider... have you had a longer discussion with her or just a quick "would you consider cloth diapers"? I'm asking because I found with providers that I talked to, when I mention CDs they think it's prefolds and snappis/pinning and leaks etc. When I brought out a pocket diaper and showed them how it has velcro and elastic and goes on just like a sposie--then there was much more openness around the idea.

Poppan, good idea -- I'll have a longer talk with her and see if I can convince her -- she's worried about children getting into the cloth dipes (the dirty ones) and since she is licensed by the state, that's a huge no-no. I am agreeable to buy a diaper pain and just use a wetbag as the liner, if she would be agreeable to that. Have to explore how set against it she is.

i honestly haven't even talked to my day care about CDs. I have enough trouble remembering to get out of the house with everything I need as it is, and cloth diapers take up a lot more room, so i'd have to remember them daily (as opposed to just taking a whole pack of 'sposies).

So, I put her in a CD as soon as we get home. She usually gets one more CD at night, and then into a 'sposie for overnight (she sleeps on me, and i'm not interested in the trial and error of finding a nighttime dipe right now!)

But during the weekend we do CD all day long.

It means I get to use my favorite diapers more, and rarely use my least faves. And once she outgrows the smalls in everything, I'll not have to buy many mediums.

I do diaper laundry twice a week, generally. Fairly small loads, but that's okay, I just set the water level lower.
