Weaning from antacid?

Hello mamas,

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as weaning from antacid? Dd (1 yr) has been on Omeprazole since the end of last year. She was initially put on 1ml, but we had to increase it to 2ml at some point. We are now down to .8ml and I am not sure if we are at baseline. She sleep fairly well at night but I think I hear some gagging at times. I am not sure if maybe she is reacting to the small amount of lentils in her diet or if it's just a noise that she makes. Anyway, does anyone know if I should just keep decreasing the dosage or just stop maybe at .5ml? Does the body need time to adjust to something after we stop all together?

thanks!

I am not a doctor, but what we did was decrease by half until we got to a low enough point that we stopped. My dd was on Zantac. We weaned her off around 6 months old.

Yes, I would wean her over a couple of weeks to allow the body to adjust. Otherwise you might end up with a very unhappy baby!!

Regarding the gagging sounds....sounds like reflux still to me. Why are you taking her off the reflux meds? If you're trying to find out what her food triggers are, you might want to consider switching her to something like zantac that won't actually stop the spit up or reflux, but it changes the Ph so it won't burn her espophageous and cause discomfort and damage. Zantac can also be given as needed and doesn't need to build up in their system. My DS had severe reflux being caused by his food sensativities. once we removed all his triggers the reflux completely went away. However, when he does have a flare up we are able to give him the zantac to help make him more comfortable and get him past the reaction.
