Q about wool for needle felting...

A site that I'm considering buying needle felting supplies sells the wool in 1/2 ounces and one ounce amounts. How much can you make with those amounts? Like this apple, for example...would that take a whole ounce? Five ounces? I'm not sure how much to get for my first time so I can complete a few projects.

Thanks!

I spent about 20.00 on roving the first time and had plenty for many little projects. An ounce is a ball about the size of a softball. I would get an ounce of 6-12 colors to start.

Often the non-dyed roving is cheaper. I got a bunch of that to use for the centers and started using color as I got to the outside. (but don't remember weights so that doesn't really answer your question )

Thanks mamas!

One more question...is this the type of felting where I've seen people here talk about buying old wool sweaters and using that instead of the roving?

No . . . although I guess you could use it for the center, but not sure how well that would work People felt wool sweaters in the washing machine. In this process the fabric becomes "fulled", the stitches are no longer distinguishable and the fabric is sturdier. Needle felting is . . . well . . . needle felting. Using a barbed needle to make the roving strands interlock with one another to create a firm fabric. HTH
