Please help - I'm pregnant with twins but one has a "small membrane"

I'm pregnant with twins and I'm 37 years old,

doctors are telling me that one twin is faring behind the other. I am 12 weeks pregnnant and the membrane around Baby A (which is the smaller baby) is much smaller than the Membrane around Baby B.

I can't find any information about small membranes. How does this affect the baby and does it affect the twin with the normal membrane?

The doctor said it could be a Chromosomal problem. I want to know if anyone else has had this experience with twins. If so, have you opted for Amniocentesis?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I've had no luck finding any information about "small membranes".

I don't have experience with twins or small membranes, but I am older than you and do opt for the nuchal fold ultrasound to screen for chromosonal issues. You're at the right gestation - it needs to be between 11-13w6d by baby age, have you had that US yet? It won't diagnose because it's only a screening test but it's noninvasive and what I would do before thinking about amnio. It will give you a risk..like 1:700 for certain conditions, like Downs, etc. to you and I hope everything is OK.

Vitamin C and zinc build strong membranes. Vitamin E too I think, but be careful supplementing the E because you can overdo it.

I would chance my luck at healthy babies if I KNEW one had a weaker membrane.

But really...is it really weak or just weaker than the other one?

I would suggest going over to the parenting multiples area and asking them, you are more likely to have some ladies that have been in your shoes.

Good luck and yes I would get the NT screening if I was you, timing is important on that screening, so if you want it get on it right away.

Is the size of the babies different, or jus the size of the amniotic sac? If it's just the sac, I probably wouldn't worry too much...it makes sense that babies may have bigger or smaller amniotic sacs, at least to me. not all chicken eggs are the same size
As for amnio, if I were 37, I would certainly opt for the nuchal fold u/s, and then base my amnio decision on the results of that screening test.
Hugs to you, mama. It's scary to be told that something about our babies is 'abnormal'.

I agree that you should pop on over to the Multiples forum and ask. As far as the NT, I had it done but they would only give the odds for Down Syndrome. They said that with twins, they won't even hazard a guess on Trisomy 18. And it's important to keep in mind that the NT scan doesn't give you a yes/no, it only estimates your risk based on ultrasound and a blood test.

I think you need to call your doctor back and have him explain what he means, and what this means to the health of the baby and the pregnancy. "Small membrane" seems like an odd way of describing an issue...sounds like he needs to answer some questions and explain things until you feel you know what's going on.

I agree with RedOakMomma. Im pretty educated about high risk obstetrics and i've never heard about small membrane before. Could it mean a small sac?
