baby's first word...WWYD?

SO first I gotta say I think this is so unbelievably cute

DS just turned 9 months and over the past 4 days I have noticed a pattern.

1st we were in the tub, he grabbed by breast and said BooBee.

This has since repeated it self and last night before bed he got all excited and said Boobee Boobee Boobee and then latched. He doesn't link these sounds in any other context.

Should I encourage this? Should I redirect to a more acceptable word (Ie you want to nurse?)

We never picked a PC term, but I also didn't say you want every time either.

I think its cute, but will he when he's older? (I mean telling people his first word?) What would you do?

IDK if you should/can teach him to say a different word for it immediately, and I think that is solely up to you what you think he should call it.

As for whether he'll think it's cute when he's older, it doesn't matter. Even if he stopped saying it tomorrow and said, "Mother, I'm feeling rather hungry. I'd like to nurse now, please" instead, his first word was, and always will be "BOOBEE!"

And yeah, I think that's cute, too. (He won't when he's 9, but it'll be hilarious at his bachelor party.

Quinn's first word was nigh nigh. I totally count it because that is how he referred to nursing for a long time. He still calls my boobs nigh-nees! I think it shows how important nursing is to him and that is a cool thing!

Awww so cute!! I say leave it. I'd laugh if my lo started saying that in public.

Cute! My first word was "kitty" followed quickly by "titty". Now why my mother was calling nursing titty is beyond me, but she still loves to tell the story of my shouting out "I want titty" very loudly in public when I was 2. BTW, my brother and sisters who followed me called it "na-na", I guess my mom learned the hard way.

But I'm not sure you should squash his first word, if that's what it's called for him, then I would go with it.

That is super cute!!!

Well you can't change his first word, can't go back in time

It's up to you, I will admit I think I'd be mortified if DS (17mos) asked for "boobee" in church or something So we taught him "eat" and he always asks to "eat-eat" when he wants to nurse. I proudly NIP etc. but I prefer a more generic word... but if it doesn't bother you then go ahead & encourage it -- either way, isn't it great when they can finally start to talk to you?! I love it!!

it is his first word you can't change that

we call nursing/breastfeeding milk simply because I don't want to be in the grocery store with a 2 yo screaming I want boobie if you think that would bother you, I would start trying to change it now. if it wouldn't bother you then don't worry about it. it's not like it's profane.

I think that's absolutely adorable, and I would probably encourage it rather than discouraging it, but I'm a dork like that.

That's hilarious!

My first word was ashhole (my dad swore a lot while driving) so I think boobee is really sweet and cute.

DS said boobee early too. He now at 2.5 will refer to my breats as boobees but when he wants to nurse he says "I want nursies"

However last week we were eating wings outside on our back porch and our neighbours were out as well (we are super close as we live in a big city) We can here there conversations clearly as I am sure they can hear ours. Anyway I was eating a spicy wing and some sauce dripped on to my breast and DS say's "Mama you have a spicy boobee" and then kept saying it really loudly over and over as I and DH were laughing

LOL my mother and my mother's sister both breastfed their children until we were around 3 - and I do NOT know why they both used the word titty. So there are several stories about me and my siblings and cousins being in stores etc. yelling for titty at age 2-3. Why would anyone do that???

Cooper's first word is definitely Mama. And yet he seems to use that word for milk too. We call it milk in our family. He had the sign for it down for a bit and still does it when he's tired, but now its confusing because he says mama for just about everything when he is needy. I don't mind, but i think daddy wishes he would say dayday more often.

My first daughter would demand "Ni! Ni!" when she wanted to nurse, so overtime breasts have been renamed "Ninnies" in our house. We like having a codeword, since they DO yell it out at inopportune times. In fact, we have a lot of codewords in our family, and my kids like that we have our own little language.

As far as the first word, I would record it in his baby book, but also maybe record the next word, so he can fib and say his first word was "cat" later on, until he thinks it is funny.

Dd1 said "milk" and for some reason dd2 says "boobie". I never stopped her and even though she's two and no longer nursing she is always talking about boobies. If she sees them she says "I find you boobie!" It's hilarious and I don't care if it's an acceptable term or not.

It's cute! My DD, now 3, does not remember any of her first words that weren't said correctly. She used to call diapers "bops" and now i say "bop" for my son (who is 9 months) and she asked me what a "bop" was? As if she's never heard the word before. I'm trying to remember other words like this...my mind is blank, but my point is that it won't be difficult to teach your baby a more acceptable word. Personally, I wouldn't want my 2 year old asking for boobies in public, but at 9 months it's totally cute.

I have a friend who called nursing "booby" with her first two, and has now banned the word in her house because she doesn't want her third shouting for "booby" in public LOL.

Whether you should redirect him to a different word is totally up to you whether you want to hear it in public. Because you will
