What solids are you feeding your 8 month old, please share?

Hi Mamas,

My babe is eating solids but I not offering her much variety. Just yams, prunes, rice and some fruit. I am very curious to what other mamas are providing for their babes.

I felt the same way--that DD was eating the same stuff all the time. I wondered if she was getting bored, but she seems to enjoy it! Right now, at almost 9 months, she eats purréd:

- wheat cereal
- zuchini
- sweet potatoes
- butternut squash
- beef
- chicken
- apricot
- bananas
- nectarines
- carrots
- pears

We also started giving her bits of banana and cheese, which she picks up with her thumb and finger (took her a week and almost every bit goes in her mouth!). Also give her half a Farley biscuit to chew on, which makes a mess, but she loves it.

We tried avocado and green beans, but she usually leaves it on her tongue, makes a face and upchucks the whole thing.

Actually, I'm curious what to make next. Can't wait to read other posts!

Cece's only 3 months old, but my friend's baby is 7 months and they are doing baby led eating. That baby eats avocado slices, sweet potato "sticks" (cut up after cooked), cooked baby carrots, cooked green beans, and other finger foods like that. No cereals, or grains other than some cooked buckwheat.

My DS is almost 8 mo, here is what he has been eating:

(none pureed, just chunks of food that he feeds himself)

apples
pears
broccolli
green beans
avacado
cucumber
apricots
peaches
strawberries
watermelon
cantelope
honeydew
blueberries
peas
carrots (gums a raw cold one, or eats a soft cooked one)
yams
potatoes
noodles
squash
coconut yogurt
coconut milk
happy baby organic puffs
rice rusks
happy baby freeze dried yogurt dots
lentils
quinoa
halibut

He gets more on himself than in his mouth, but he loves eating!

DS does not like any purees. He did do Organic Apple sauce for a bit.

So far
Peppers
celery
Carrots (cooked and uncooked)
bananas
sweet potato
Rice pasta (I usually use puree baby foods as a sauce)
pears
organic chicken (just started this week since he just turn 9 months)
apple
string beans
melon
Broccoli (We tried but constipated him, will say however he liked it)
Peas (I de-shell for him)

I think thats it so far. I have only been feeding organic so introductions have been slower as we only go to the store once a week.

We are not starting dairy, gluten, soy or berries until after a year due to concerns for allergies, he has just started to tolerate dairy in my diet and I am gluten free.

ETA: a few I forgot

My dd LOVES pureed "meals". Whatever I cook for her is set aside (whole) and I give her the chance to try to eat it in sticks or chunks, but we've had lots of choking scares. The rest is pureed for little meals. She goes wild for the little food cups when I bring them out, but as long as she also keeps trying to eat finger foods, I'll keep on offering.

Her favorite meals so far have been:

Pureed:
Chicken + green lentils + apples
Winter squash + quinoa + cinnamon
Sweet potato + quino + cinnamon
Pears + blueberries + oatmeal (Happy Bellies organic oatmeal)

Finger Foods:
Slow cooked chicken that practically falls apart
Little balls of ground beef and cream cheese
Cereal puffs (Happy Bellies)
Avocado

My guy is 9 mos, and what he eats on any typical day varies greatly. But the range of food he's tried and passed is pretty good.

We haven't given him any grains, and we won't until he's at least 18 mos.

Today he had:
cottage cheese
eggs
plum
peach
nectarine
apricot
blueberry
cantaloupe
cheddar cheese
romaine lettuce

But he also eats:
beans
salmon
lamb
pork
buffalo (not sure if we've tried beef yet)
sweet potato (not mashed or baked, though)
broccoli
asparagus
jicama
tomato
onion (but he doesn't care for garlic)
cauliflower
butternut
cucumber
all sorts of cheeses (although he doesn't care for sharp cheddar)
mandarins
banana
avocado
grapes
watermelon
cherries
corn on the cob
yogurt
lentils

He's also eaten Indian dal and a lentil and lamb curry dish, although I think that's one of the few "complex" dishes he's eaten.

He eats pretty much whatever we do - he's tried almost everything we've gotten in our CSA box lately, so whatever fruits/veggies have been in season during the last 3 months.

Cooper is eating
rice cereal
apple sauce
blueberries
yams
avocado
kale
apricots
zucchini
potatoes
strawberries
barbara's O's
carrots
maple teething cookies
dal and rice curry (his fav)
today he tried lettuce
lots of mother's milk
my mom gave him some pizza crust, apparently he loved it.

He still has no teeth. Anyday now.
I would feed him more if he could really chew. He just rolls the chunks around in his mouth gumming it.

three meals a day at this point. But I think mostly it ends up on the chair or his face.

By 8mo my DD was eating most of the same foods that I eat at meal-times. She started eating between 5-6mo, I introduced a few things slowly, then I started feeding her the same meals as the rest of the family.

ETA: She did start getting teeth very early and had about 8 by the time she was 8mo. She learned to chew very quickly and has never had much issue with eating chunks or choking. Also, she self feeds almost entirely.

DS is almost eight months old. He eats a mixture of purees and chunks, and he usually gets one "meal" daily, with tastes of what we're eating (as appropriate) throughout the day. He has no teeth yet.

He has had:

banana (chunks and puree)
mango (chunks and puree)
applesauce (with cinnamon)
pear sauce (vith vanilla)
peach sauce
sweet potato
spinach
avocado
egg yolk (hard boiled)
yogurt (plain, whole milk)
peas
oat/barley/spelt cereal
rise rusks
broccoli
carrots
watermelon (a BIG hit!)
honeydew
pita bread
pizza crust
green beans
puffs
celery
rice
cucumbers
chicken
black beans
potato

We do baby led weaning. I don't puree anything.
My 9 month olds eats:

fruit - really anything cut up except for apples. He loves watermelon & strawberries the best

Frozen mixed veggies (corn, peas, carrots). We thaw them, but don't cook them. Makes an easy snack.

Cheerios
cucumbers and hummus
soft cooked potatoes
beans - all varieties
small pieces of chicken & beef
rice & quinoa

Anything that we're eating that I feel safe giving him...So he's had everything from yellow curry to maple-glazed salmon.

My 8 month old had a few pieces of banana tonight.

And that's all he's had so far, other than breast milk.

May I ask why you chose to do so?

I know that I personally don't want to feed Cecilia any cereals at all, and only whole grains, because eating easily digestible grain products too early in life can lead to obesity later-- and amazingly enough, my pediatrician told me this (I had already decided not to do cereals but it was wonderful to hear the doctor confirm it). I think whole grains in their natural state, like cooked quinoa, barley, etc, are way healthier than processed carb and I'd rather start Cecilia off on the right foot!

Ds is approaching 10 months. I don't do baby food, but do spoon feed him applesauce, Scottish oats, homemade rice cereal, etc. as long as he is interested in eating them. I also chew some foods and feed him from my finger (such as steamed or sauteed pea pods, which he loves but can't seem to self feed very well). Other than that he's on his own:

raw:
apple, pear, carrot, cucumber, peach, nectarine, raspberry, cherry, blueberry, cantaloupe, watermelon

cooked:
yam, carrot, potato, rice, rice pasta, green beans, peas, pea pods, apple, zucchini, mushroom, egg yolk, parsnip, celery, broccoli, asparagus

other:
breakfast o's (sugar and wheat free cheerio-type cereal), rice cake, sesame rice cracker

That's all that comes to mind at the moment. We haven't done beans or other legumes, meat or fish, or dairy yet.

what form do you do the grains at this point that they can pick them up and eat them?

I make my own brown rice hot cereal that we all eat, and I feed it to ds with a spoon (gasp!). I steam brown or white rice and either let him self-feed or help him get it into his mouth with my fingers. If you add a little extra water, it makes the rice stickier and a little easier to form into clumps for self-feeding.

Rice cakes also are very easy for them to self-feed.

The only other grain ds gets at this point is Scottish oats (hot cereal) which I also spoon for him.

Dd2 is 10 months this week and I give her lots of things to try. A recent fav is shredded/grated zucchinis and carrots that I sautée for a couple minutes in some olive oil then I add an egg yolk. She loves it.

We have moved on to baked yam slices since she is learning to self feed more and more.
Macaroni is good too now that she seems to tolerate gluten.
