Having a period but not OV???

Hi,
I am 28 and my DH and I have been TTC since March 09. I thought that I was OV all this time, but decided to take an OV test at home after a year had gone by without getting pregnant.

I have tested for two months and it never showed up that I was OV. I saw my Gyn and she said to test another month, because I get my period regularly and she finds it hard to believe that I don't OV.

She said to call her if I don't OV this month. If I do OV, she said try for a few more months and see what happens.

Is this a normal response from a Dr.?
Also, is it common to get your period regularly but not ovulate?

Thanks so much!:

Yes it's quite common to have normal looking cycles and not ovulate. We tried to get pregnant with DS2 for a year, I was temping and charting and my charts showed clear ovulation patterns and my cycles were 32 days long with a supposed 11 day luteal phase. I went to my Gyno and they took a battery of blood tests and found in fact I was not ovulating. I argued that my charts showed ovulation, but my blood tests showed otherwise. Well we found out I had PCOS and went on meds for that and conceived easily. So don't give up hope, theres a good chance you are ovulating, but maybe not, if not there are alot of low tech things that can be done. I would say your Gyno will probably give you blood tests next to check hormone levels at certain times in your cycle if you don't get your BFP before that. Good Luck!

I took 6 cycles of clomid and it didn't help me, of course i didn't know about the PCOS yet. As soon as I started taking metformin and I also took 80mg of Soy Isoflavones days 3-7 BFP right away, Soy Isoflavones is a natural OTC clomid. We are trying to conceive our 3rd so we will see if it's as easy this time. I definately recommend soy to kick start O.

Have you been charting? I think that temps are much more accurate than the ovulation tests. HTH!

I share the same problem. I have my periods but do not OV either. I have been on clomid for a while now which has not worked yet. I wish it would work soon, but the odds dont seem to be in my favor.

It IS common to have a period regularly without ovulating as the pp's have stated. My former naturopath said she believed that EVERY woman had a couple of annovulatory cycles each year. It is NOT normal (or maybe effecient is a better word) for a Dr. to have a 28 y/o patient who has been ttc for over a year, shows the possibility of not ovulating and not at least run some tests to figure out why. Wait and see doesn't cut it in this game. I think it's time to see an RE asap or get a new Gyn who is better versed in ovulation/fertility issues. Have you had cd3 blood tests run? Have you been tested for PCOS? These are only starting points, but things your Dr. should be doing.

There are treatment options available - but you have to run the tests and have a Dr. who is knowledgeable enough about potential issues to even start down that road. Also if you aren't already charting as a pp suggested, then start. That can help answer questions about when you ovulate, if you do. It could be something as simple as just not timing dtd right. hth.

I agree with the pp, you should be having some tests done, most insurance covers diagnostic tests for infertility. I also agree with finding a doctor specializing in infertility. I also had a gyno that waited and waited and put me on six months of clomid without monitoring or really getting to the bottom of the matter. It just took my stress and stretched it out over a long period of time.
