what do i "teach" for first grade? lots of questions - Page 2

I suggest getting the books "What Your First Grader Needs to Know" and "Making the Grade: Everything Your 1st Grader Needs to Know" for an idea of overall focus areas you might want to address. You can usually get these from the library.

We just finished using Oakmeadow for our two first graders and we all loved it. We left out some busy work and added a lot of reading but all in all had lessons for about an hour and a half a day with some months off due to baby # 5!
Good luck!!!

I love seeing what everyone has planned. This year I'll have one in first grade, and another in 3rd/4th grade. My main challenge will be dividing my time between the two (and getting to work on time!).

For first grade, we'll be doing:

Explode the Code 1, 2
Sonlight readers
Singapore Math 1A, 1B
Sonlight Science
Five in a Row
Violin

Reading is *just* on the horizon. Dd recognizes a lot of sight words, and is close to putting the sounds together. I'm looking forward to a daily routine, knowing that she'll "get it" soon.

We are just getting started this year but after much research and tuning in to my kids I have picked:

1) Explode the Code
2) Sequential spelling
3) Handwriting without tears
4) Math u see
5) Language of God for grammar
6) CHC Catechism...will be combining 2 years since I got word that DD#1 can make her 1st Sacraments spring 2011.
7) Usborne science experiments
8) Story of the World for history
9) Art history through CHC

We are excited. Good luck up.

I meant Good Luck...chatter box was talking to me. Oh, our school board has a matrix of expectations of each grade level. That being said...I live in Louisiana...I think we're #49 in the USA. Thusly, we are homeschooling since I don't see the point of me working just to pay private school tuition.
