Dead mouse in dog food--health concerns?

We opened a new bag of dog food today and didn't see the dead mouse inside until after the dogs ate.

Are there any health risks to the dogs?

I contacted the manufacturer to complain and am waiting to hear back.

I wouldn't worry about the dogs catching anything. Dogs eat dead, rotten things in the wild. I WOULD worry about how the mouse died. If it was poisoned then that could affect the dogs. Do you have an emergency vet to call just in case?

Oh poop. That's a good point! I don't know, I haven't heard back from anyone at the manufacturer.

I will give the vet a call.

The dogs are still alive today, so I guess that is a good sign, right?

They should be fine. But I'd definitely not be feeding from that bag anymore - I would worry what else slipped past their quality controls with this batch.

Did the bag show any sings of having been chewed into? I personally would want to know if it got in there when they were making it or later during storage.

Okay... WHAT COMPANY!!! Eeew... I really need to know what company's dog food this was. I am so horrified. SO flippin gross.

Please share which company this was...

Yes please share the company name if not on the board then via pm to those that want to know just in case we use that brand

I would take the bag back where you bought it explain what happened and either trade it in or get a refund.

Remember that before we go straight to blaming the company and yes they may be at fault here, that it is also likely that the mouse got in during storage and transit or even in the store. A mouse can get in a amazingly small hole, so small it's shocking really.

Anywhere you have large food storage there is some amount of mouse activity, I personally pour my cats food out of a bag into a sealable tub before using it to keep mine safe, I suppose it has the secondary effect of letting me look at it before I start using it. It was not the original reason I do it, freashness is, but now I'm very glad I do.

So yes let's keep this to PM's if you feel like sharing the info. And possible better yet, understand that as gross as this is it can happen to any bag of food from anyone.

Thanks Adorkable for that post. I immediatly thought to blame the company too, but pet stores and pet food stores always have lots of mice (so do our grocery stores for that matter). The mouse could certainly have burrowed into the food bag at the store. Return for a refund, then I'd consider buying my food elsewhere - a different store may have better pest control.

Did you hear anything back from the company? Just wondering whether or not they responded...
