swhat does yours look like?

drastically different than school time or not?

dd is a night owl. she had to change that when first grade started at 8. she went to an afternoon K. but now at summer she is back to her natural routine.

her natural routine is going to bed after midnight and waking up around 10 to noon.

she is loving her routine. it doesnt really affect me so i dont mind it.

During the school year my kids (9 and 13) go to bed at 9. During the summer, I let them stay up later but most days they still have morning activities that need us up at 7 or 8 on a regular basis. This means I'm still shooing them to bed at 10 or 11.

I really do "feel" it myself. DH and I usually have some time alone between their bedtime and when we go to sleep. When they are awake, they want to be with us and while that's great, it also means that DH and I are never alone to chat about our day and things going on in the adult world. I always miss him a lot in the summer!

LIfe during the summer is MUCH more relaxed than during the school year. I have two early-risers and two night-owls. The early-risers sort of naturally keep to a similar schedule even during summer break. The night owls stay up later and sleep later in the morning. As long as we don't have something going on early in the morning, I'm okay with this. We do still have "bedtimes" for our elementary-aged kids. But bedtime means that they need to be quiet in their bedrooms, not that they actually have to turn off their lights and go to sleep. Right now we aim for a bedtime of 9:00 or 10:00pm, but it's not uncommon for us to have parties or other events that keep our kids up until midnight or even later.

Dd (8) has her own summer schedule. I have mine, which is similar to during the school year. I'm a morning person and during the school year am up at 5am, during the summer maybe an hour later. Dd is a night owl. It doesn't affect me because my mom is a night owl too and she lives with us. Dh and I are usually in bed before dd and she is out in my mom's rooms playing cards with her. I usually wake up when dd gets into bed (she still co-sleeps) around midnight. Once she's in bed, she'll usually read for a while, but I get back to sleep quickly, so I'm not sure when she finally goes to sleep. She does wake up 10 - 11 and one day last week slept until noon. I like having my mornings free and since my mom lives with us, it doesn't affect me getting morning errands done, either.

My kids stay on a pretty similar schedule in the summer. We believe it's important to have a regular sleep schedule. Our kids are 4, 7, and 9 and they are all usually asleep by 8:30pm during the school year and by 9pm on summer nights, although we will vary that for special events during the summer (like family parties, fireworks and such). I like having my break in the evening and I have schoolwork I need to do as well (I'm in university).
