Hi- I would love some advice on switching to CDs for my son who will be 2 in the fall and likely only in them for 1.5 more yrs. I'm wondering if its worth the $$ investment. We are not planning on having another child so I would not be able to pass down the CDs in the family. If I make the switch, I'm likely going to use pocket diapers. How many will I need and about how much will the set-up likely cost me? Any input is appreciated!!

I don't think it would be a bad investment - you can sell/trade/donate the diapers afterward. I wouldn't bother with one-sized stuff, and using pocket diapers you'd have inserts already for using pocket training pants when potty learning, so that's another bonus (or you might get by just using your regular diapers during that time, depending). You can search for getting some of your stash used, which might let you try out some different diaper styles/brands since you'd be new to CD and would save you money. You'd likely only need larges so you wouldn't have to buy a whole new stash in a different size.

I'm guessing at having somewhere around 3 dozen is where you'd want to be around. You could probably pick some of it up as a package deals - so you'd pay maybe just under $200 for a dozen pockets with inserts at most places (making stuff right around $15/diaper which is a great price for most pockets).

There is a fabulous calculator at diaperpin.com that will tell you exactly when/if you will break even on the cost.

but don't forget, you can sell them on craigslist when you're done
