Anything to spray on carpets to keep cat from scratching?

The cat already has scratching things that are okay. Still, she is tearing up certain areas of the carpet. Is there something I can spray on those areas to keep her from doing this? She's destroying them and it's so frustrating.

Wouldn't vinegar or something detract them? Is it hopeless?

I don't know but our cat does this two - in two specific areas. She won't use a scratching post. Ugh. So I hope someone has a good idea for us!

cats scratch to "file" their nails. keeping their nails trimmed should keep them from scratching things, in general. sometimes cats are detracted from certain things that are meant for them to scratch on by really silly things, and then find something else for awhile. i would suggest NOT using any kind of spray or chemicals on your animal, and instead just tell them "no." and put them near their scratching post. there are many articles online that teach you to manage your cats behavior issues humanely. sometimes, tho, just realizing that it isn't behavioral, its grooming, helps, cos you can prevent the scratching in the first place.

But my cat always scratches worse after her nails are trimmed, so I don't think that's it. And she has other scratching posts. There's no way carpet is filing her nails. I'm certain it's for pleasure. Also, of course I tell her "no" when I catch her, but she does 99% of it while I'm gone. That's the problem. She loves her scratchers and uses them all the time. She also does it if a door is shut because she wants through. She wants free reign of the house.

Bitter apple spray! it's more for cats that chew/bite things, but it worked on our cat with scratching our couch!
