Mystery

We seem to have an issue with mystery stains. This is what I know :

- the stains appear as a result of washing or drying.

- they have only appeared on white terry cloth.

- it happened to us while living in Seattle and Montreal, but I don't think it ever happened or worsened while we were living in Halifax.

- the stains start out barely visible, you just see a dark spot when you hold the item up to the light, but the more the item is washed and dried the more visible it becomes until it turns dark gray.

- I don't use fabric softener.

- the items that this has happened to have all been washed in extremely hot water (90C) with Borax, oxyclean and Persil soap.

- the items are being very well rinsed.

Any ideas what's going on?

It could possibly be some type of mineral deposit built up in your pipes leading to your washing machine. I had a very similar problem with mystery rust colored stains on white cotton clothing in one city I lived in. After much googling, talking with the leasing company and neighbors, I determined that it was old pipes pumping in dirty water into my washing machine.

LJ, what did they end up doing about it? I'm having the same problem!
