weight and asthma

I am just home from the hospital with my 14 year old son. He had a asthma attack on Thursday. The doctor said extra weight contributes to asthma. This is his second attack, ever. I really want to help him develop healthy habits. I don't want to make him more body conscious than he already is. He is about 40 pounds overweight. He is motivated to change. I am trying to convince his dad (me ex) to ban soda from his diet. What nutrients should I focus on?

Add zinc, magnesium, vit C, selenium, Epsom salt baths. Folate and probiotics. They are all available in food forms.
