Need help in getting rid of stuff

I really want to have a garage sale. I'm challenged by work schedules and kid schedules... and the fact that we are currently living in my parents' basement and don't have a good staging area to get ready for a garage sale. We need the $, but are planning on donating anything that doesn't go on the garage sale - no more storing stuff. I'm tired of moving everything.

I'd like to decrease the volume of stuff in our storage unit by about half. What I need from you decluttering savy ladies is a way to sort stuff to keep/sale.

It is me, dh, ds (9yo), dd1 (almost 7 yo), and dd2 (9 months). Mostly trying to figure out what to keep from dd1 for dd2.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

when time and space are at a premium, i recommend using an auction house. it's essentially a garage sale that way, but everything is gone at once. the auction house takes their fee, and gives you the remainder. assuming you sell enough stuff for enough $, you should get some money.

I have all this stuff I've been saving for a garage sale; we could really use the money but I'm limited on time and this "stuff" is driving me batty! I just can't bring myself to donate it even though it would probably make me feel 100x's better. I might make some $ off the garagesale but honestly, I would pay to have a decluttered house.

I have been listing stuff on Craigslist & Freecycle since we just don't have the right "garage sale" location here (nor the time to host it). You could also consider consignment -- less money but it will all be OUT of your space!!

I wrote a long reply & then realized I misread your post. So it's mostly stuff from DD1 that you want to pass on to DD2 who is 6-7 years younger? So then I'd get rid of anything broken, ripped, stained... then get rid of things you just never really liked much (unwanted gifts, that really annoying toy, the ugly shirt your gma got her, etc.)... also get rid of clothes that will likely go out of style, 'fad' toys, etc. Depending how much is left, you can either keep it all or give yourself a limit ("1 box of clothes in each size") and pick your favorites to meet that limit, get rid of the rest.

Thanks! I think I can live with the limit suggestion.
