Dental bill dilemma

Please advise as to how you would handle.

X & I split out of pocket medical/dental costs 50/50. The kids have dental insurance, through him. The catch is, the insurance only reimburses - it doesn't pay the dentist directly. So, the bill has to be paid first. Right now, the bills come to me, in my name. So I've got a bill for $768 right now. I'm thinking that if I pay my half, I won't get my share of the reimbursement, whatever that might be (based on past history, I'm guessing at least a couple hundred dollars).

OTOH, he'll flip if I have the bills sent directly to him. He's very unreliable/irresponsible financially - I still get collections calls for him (but there is nothing in my name, they just are trying to reach him via my numbers), his c/s is usually late, etc.

Argh - WWYD?

Tell the dentist office.. I'm SURE you're not the only divorced couple they serve. They can probably split the bills in 1/2 and send one to you and one to him. They may give you a hard time for continuing services if he defaults.. but that's what lawyers and courts are for.
