Throwing around some baby names here.

If it's a boy, I'm pretty sure it will be James Michael Steven, after three men who mean the world to me. I would call him James.

The girl name is a little harder. It's after three females in my life who mean the world to me, but I'm wondering about the variant for the first name. The original is Lillian, which I love, but I also like the two other options. Either way, I'd call her Lilly. What do you think?

Lillian

I love Lillian!

Lillianna - the two sets of double letters look really busy to me.

Lillia - Rhymes with cilia, it was my first word association when I read it.

Wow, I know it's still early in the poll, but so far, it's unanimous- my son also prefers Lillian. Keeping this in mind....

Lillianna is too much...and there are boatloads of girls names that are doing the "anna" ending right now. Lillian is elegant and strong and lovely...keep it as it is!

Lillia looks like a body part or biology term to me...not a name.

I have a 5yr old Lilliana (Lily-ahna). We call her Lily. If you like a name go for it. Don't worry about what everyone else is theoretically doing.

This is why our Lily's name is spelled Lilliana.

Your names are fine. But I think that if you're going to call her Lily you should just name her Lily.

Most names have nicknames...

My husband is named David, we call him Dave. Should his mom just have named him Dave then? My dad is Steven/Steve. My grandma is Patricia/Pat. My other grandma is Lillian/Lil.

I love Lillian. That's my vote.

I have a nickname and have always hated it. My name is Catherine, I go by Catie. I like either name just fine, I just wish my parents would have called me by whatever name they named me.. it has just been a small annoyance to me all my life to have to tell people "I go by Catie"..... JME, I agree use whatever name you want! All beautiful. I just personally have not liked going by a name other than my "real" name, and I plan on naming my children whatever we are going to call them by.

Lillia was on our short list of girl's names when I was pregnant with DS1.

Yes, I agree, most names have nicknames. But your examples: Steve, Pat and Lil are all obvious shortenings of longer names.

Lily, on the other hand, is not a nickname, but a name in its own right. That's why I think that if the OP is going to call her girl something that is actually a full name, that's what she should name her.

I am Lillian (Lilli for short.) It's an okay name, but very uncommon when I was growing up, which made it hard.

If you do Liliana, spell it one L, one N.

I love Lillianna (though I would go Lilliana) but I think when you add Mary Kathrine, plus a last name, the whole thing is way too long. So, I voted Lillian.

Would it be better if she/I/we called her Lilli instead? Since that would be the shortened version of Lilliana?

I've meet a Kate, a Beth and a Jenny who were all named that as their full names. How are these, then, not names in their own right? I guess I just honestly do not understand the problem with liking a full name, but using a nickname.

Lilliana for us is a really formal, long, serious sort of name, but gorgeous and a way to make a namesake for my grandma. We liked the idea of using Lily for a little girl. Now that she's five, it's half and half as to what I call her. I also like the idea that if she chose, when she's older, she might go by Lillian or Ana instead. I have an unusual name (similar to a "well established" one though) that has several possible nicknames. Various people in my life use each one. I love the versatility. That's the perspective I brought to naming our girls.

I voted for Lillian. And I think it's fine to call her Lily for short.

OK so about the name kids what your going to call them. Really not a big deal. Just introduce her as her nickname.

My name has two nicknames one I like one I don't. I just make sure no one calls me by the one I'm not. (kinda like Andrew can be Andy or Drew, both common)

Personally, I love having the lengthening option. It was nice as a teenager in deciding who I was to have another choice to define myself. Plus its nice having a grown up name and a nick name and a only people that love me/really know me name.

But that being said do know she may go by her full name at some point so its good to like that one too. My cousin is Amelia, goes by Amy, but her mom hated when people called her Amelia

Totally off topic, OP, but i'm sooo curious as to what your signature used to say can you share? lol

I disagree with the "just name her Lily" idea.

I have a traditional name that has tons (and I mean TONS) of nicknames. My parents called me by one of them growing up, but when I got older I chose a different nickname for myself, and now I most often go by the whole first name.

As a person with a name that is very nickname-able, and whose parents went into it knowing they'd call me one of the nicknames, I have to say...I loved the arrangement. Really loved it. My childhood nickname was a real name, not some made-up thing, but when I got older I was able to choose from the name/nicknames something that reflected my older self.

We're very conscious of possible nicknames with our kids, and with two of our children we've chosen short names that have no nicknames. With our daughter, though, we followed my name pattern. She has a name that can be shortened or nicknamed in at least a dozen legit ways, and we mostly call her by one of them. At the same time, when she's older, she can choose to go by the full (very lovely) name. I'm hoping she appreciates the arrangement as much as I have.
