anyone do a montessori floor bed? - Page 2

We have started this with our now 9-month old daughter. We sfirst put her in the floor bed around 7 months - she was sick and we had an Ikea Sultan mattress that I put her on. It allowed me to comfort her back to sleep when she woke up. She has always slept in her own room - we're not co-sleepers - and so far it has worked out fine. We keep the door shut tight and have baby-proofed the room. SHe sometimes rolls onto the floor (carpet) but doesn't seem to mind. Now that she has started crawling, when she wakes up she crawls to the door and bangs on the door. But very little crying. SHe's been a good sleeper since early on. I was worried when she started crawling and am still considering getting a crib, but so far don't really see the need. Good luck.

Our little guy has been on a twin size futon (on the floor) in a baby proofed room of his own since about 7 months.  It's working great!

We coslept with my older kids. With the little one (6 mos) we are cosleeping but have had a floor bed set up since birth that she sometimes naps in or sleeps the first part of the night in. Eventually we would like her to sleep there more and more. She can roll off of it now and scoot around on the floor a little. It's a crib/toddler mattress with a sheet and blanket.

Wow, I had no idea there was a name for this set-up, or that it bad anything to do with Montessory.
As soon as DS was crawling and could no longer nap on our bed, we decided to get a crib for him for naps (we cosleep at night) . Well, I don't think it's going to get much use as I realized I do not have the patience to "train" him to sleep in it, as he wakes up almost every time I lay him down in it, even if he's deeply asleep.
So for the last 2 months he's been napping on the floor on some blankets, and I have been wanting to just bring the crib mattress down there and make a little cuddly sleep corner for him.

At least the crib we got can be rearranged to be a children's bed and he can use it probably until the age if 6 or so once he moves out of our bed...so it wasn't a total waste of money, lol.

I never new what it was called, but when dd was 17 months we moved her from our bed/side-carred crib to a full mattress on the floor in her room (adjacent to ours).  If she had been going to sleep on her own at 10 months, I think it would have been great to start then!  I know I closed the bathroom door, but I don't think I ever used a baby gate at that age -- I always heard her when she was up, and, unfortunately, she was never one to play alone.  She's almost 4 and she still calls out to me and waits for me to come before she gets out of bed.

Ds is 16 months and in a crib, but I have been planning to take the crib apart and put the mattress on the floor for him.  There are a couple things I haven't figured out yet -- like how to have a humidifier going in the room (one of his favorite activities is turning the thing on and then dis-assembling it while it's running yikes2.gif).

We still mostly co sleep, but we have a floor bed that is perpendicular to our bed.  Ours is up on a frame, hers is directly on the floor. She starts out her nights there. When she wakes to nurse I pull her up into my bed, and thats where she stays until morning. We are going to try nightweaning next month, so hopefully she will sleep in her bed until she wakes for her morning nursing.

This idea intrigues me very much.  But can you still keep a dresser in the room?  We have a small townhouse and there's no closet in the kids' bedroom for clothes.  What about a changing table?  I suppose as long as they can't climb it or get to stuff on low shelves right?  There's no way I could have a changing station on the floor, it would hurt my back too much.

There are kits you can get to tether a dresser (or changing table or whatever) to the wall so that they can't tip it over on themselves.  You screw one end of it into the wall (stud) and one end into the piece of furniture.  Then you just have to make sure not to keep anything dangerous in unlocked drawers, especially the lower ones.

All three of ours have a mattress on the floor. I've always loved it but never heard it called anything. Very easy for crawling little ones to go in and take a nap whenever they want.

It is great, floor bedders always have a good experience for the most part.

Good luck!
