This baby sucks! ;)

... my pinky, that is. This baby has a strong, strong need to suck all day long, and since she can only find her hands when she's not tired or on her back, naptime is kind of a nightmare. She really really really really wants to be a thumb sucker, but isn't there yet with the dexterity. She's content to slurp on her fists or the occasional finger she can figure out when she's wide awake, but the minute she gets sleepy she loses it and gets frustrated and cranky. She HATES the pacifier (and believe me, I have tried many different kinds, lots of different techniques, etc., but she still acts like I am trying to gag her), and lately doesn't even really want the nipple unless she's actually hungry (which is a change). She only wants to suck on my pinky... for hours and hours if she could!
So, to get her to nap at all, I either have to be wearing her and walking really vigorously, or giving her my pinky to suck on until she's really asleep, and then I can only slip it out if I'm really quick and she's really out, and I still have to kind of press in on her chin to make her think she's still sucking, or jam her mouth up against my side, and even then she wakes up half the time and demands more pinky action. She takes really short naps and mama has to work hard to get her to fall asleep and stay asleep... if I get up or put her down or even take away my pinky or pressure against her mouth, she usually wakes up within 10 minutes, even if she's deep asleep. Luckily the nights tend to go better once the sun's down, so far.
So, what is the deal with this crazy need to suck all of the time?! She's always needing a lot of sucking but now it's finger-specific and not the boob. Maybe it's because my milk letdown is pretty intense and she usually gets totally full in about 5-10 minutes tops? So she's not getting enough normal sucking?
And my main question is - when will she figure out how to suck her thumb or fingers when she's tired?! She seems almost there, but has for weeks. Sometimes she can get a finger in but not at the right angle (again, she almost gags herself) and never when she's tired.
I want a thumbsucker, future orthodontia be damned! I cannot emphasize enough how intensely she wants to suck on my fingers for so much of the day, and nothing else will suffice. I'm burning out!

Jess, can I just say how much better you are sounding, and how happy I am that you're doing so well now? I know you're still sorting everything out, but you sound so so much healthier and happier now than a couple of weeks ago.

Same deal here, except she only needs to suck at night.
Yeah- fast flow realling makes them mad!
I am so hoping she'll find her own finger. It would make her feel so much better and I dont think she would ever cry or be unhappy.
And..... I could get a shower, get the laundry done, stop having to sing opera while wearing her and walking up and down the hallway 5000 times a day, have time to chew a salad......

But at the same time I know I'll miss staring into her eyes while she sucks on my finger and looks at me like she is the BOSS!

Well, I can't speak for Symphony, of course, but I can share my experience. Sprout was born 3/31 (so 19 days ahead of her?). Last weekend, my mom remembers that he had to run his hand up his chest to get it to his mouth, but he was doing so fairly easily. This weekend, both hands go right to his mouth even when sitting -- easily and frequently.

Now, DD, at 3.25 months, when laying down still had to run her hand along the floor, then across her cheek, then hope to catch a finger in her mouth.

So it's going to vary a lot, but you should be getting close!

We kinda have the opposite problem.... He has a high sucking need but will now NOT take my finger and only wants to comfort suck on my boob! (he used to happily suck on my finger, but he will only bite them now if I offer one!) This is fine, if the boob is pretty near to empty. I have a huge supply though - and unless he has been on that side for more than 4 hours (we have to do some serious block nursing due to my abundant supply! lol) - then there is just too much milk there and he gets really irritated with it all (comfort sucking also does not help with my already large supply issues! lol). He also will not take a dummy of any kind. I have a bucket full of a variety (even ones I got shipped from America! lol) - just sitting there collecting dust.
When he is awake, he also likes to chomp away at his hands. It is like he is desperatly trying to find a finger to suck on. I think it really has to do with their control - or lack of. He is 11 weeks now and only just starting to reach out and bat at toys. So he clearly doesn't have that kind of control yet to be able to think 'I wanna suck...oh here is my finger, I will just stick this in my mouth and suck away contented' - and follow through yet! I can't see that happening until he is about four months old.

Ann, I had the same experience (boob and rarely taking a finger) but something recently changed. It's strange, I almost miss her wanting the boob to suck on even when she was full! The finger just feels so yucky and awkward after a few minutes. But I am glad that she's not sucking and getting so much milk she throws up anymore (knock on wood). and I HATE when she is sucking on my nipples and gets mad that she can't drift off because milk is still coming out so she still has to swallow, and so she pinches down and shakes her head in frustration like a fish on a hook. YIKES!
Also, Ann - maybe he's starting to teethe?

And Jen, phew, I know it differs by babe, but that is reassuring... she works at it almost the entire time she's awake so I have been hoping she'll get better at it soon. But I have no idea and started getting scared it could be months and months.
Right now, she kind of has to use one hand to hold the other to her mouth, which is kind of funny and cute. But she can only really suck on her firsts which just does not do it for her.
Maybe I'm putting too much hope on her being able to suck on her own fingers - if they are anywhere near as good as mine, she'll be in heaven!

Also hilarious: when she can't control her hands, sometimes she kind of barks/ beeps at them in anger. I just picture her saying, "hey, you, get back here!"

L doesn't like sucking on my fingers so much anymore as she likes to eat them. She gums them to death.

But I think that is because she's found her own. Mostly she gets her fists, but she's getting better and better at getting her fingers. Usually she gets her forefinger and middle finger at the same time, which DH loves because he used to suck those same two fingers when he was a baby.

The other day she noticed that she actually had hands. Like, she'd been sucking on them for weeks and just suddenly *saw* them for the first time. She sat there staring at them like she was high.

Cecilia gums my thumb like it's going out of style. She also directs it right to the tooth ridge I can feel on the bottom when she starts chewing!

She tries so hard to suck on her fingers but can't get her fist open yet, so she makes the sloppiest, wettest sounds possible trying to suck on her whole fist. God, she's cute.

Becky will grab her runaway hand with her other hand, and cram it back in her mouth. "Let's see you get away NOW sucker!"

Rhi - Becky saw her feet for the first time the other day and did the same thing. She'd move one, and then jump because OMG that thing just moved, and then she'd smile.. and then move it again, jump again...

Ha Ha! My DD1 used to do this, it was hilarious! She was a little older though, maybe 4 or 5 months? She would hold them in front of her face and open and close them over and over and just looked at them totally amazed. It was sooooo funny to watch.

I think he is. DS1 started teething around 12 weeks. I, apparently, got a tooth at three months. So its possible they are shifting under those gums!

So funny, I was thinking of how cute this would be, then this morning S found her feet... while pooping at 7am! I was trying to think it was cute but I slept terribly all morning so I was going, "uugh, don't be cute, go back to sleep!!"
