I bet if she did have Gastric bypass surgery, she would have told you when asked. Or, maybe she did have it, but had a bad experience telling others about it and decided to lie from then on? People can be really judgmental. I don't think I would be offended, or feel like the friendship couldn't be saved - either way. Weight-loss in general can be very sensitive and personal to a lot of people, so I would be inclined to believe someone and not give it much more thought. Maybe she had the hernia surgery and that helped jump-start her weight loss and she is dieting and/or exercising now.

I have a good friend who recently had her boobs done, but she is telling very few people (like, not even her own parents, siblings, or IL's) - I'm sure even if asked, she is denying. That's her business, and I honestly wouldn't be upset if I was one of the many people she decided not to share with.

Try not to let it bother you or impact your relationship.

ETA: oh, when I had an exploratory laparotomy I came out of the hospital almost 20 lbs lighter. It was noticeable b/c I only weighed 130 before I got sick. Obviously, when they were looking around my insides they didn't remove any fat , but the shock of surgery on my body plus being on IV's and not eating meant weight loss. All in less than 3 weeks time. When people have more weight to lose they tend to lose bigger amounts quicker, yk? So it's pretty likely that your friend wasn't lying, and hopefully she's not too offended being asked.
