Best cell phone plans for a family?

DH needs to get a new cell phone and I am hoping that we can find a plan that allows to add on a phone for a small fee each month. Does anyone already know the ins and outs of those kinds of plans and which is best?
Thanks!

I have AT&T and it only costs an additional $9.99 a month to add my DD's line. Of course, I had to up our texting plan after adding her - but it still doesn't cost too much more than having just my phone. We share the lowest amount of minutes, and never go anywhere close to over the limit.

DH has verizon through a business plan from work - otherwise we would add a line for him, too.

I think most companies offer this option - and usually the phones are free if you sign up for a 2-yr contract (more standard phones, at least - we have smart phones, so they cost a bit).

Just compare the different carriers in your area and see what the best rate is.

Check out this awesome tool - let's you compare your plan with others and will show you the best deal for the kind of service you want (contract vs no contract, # of lines, etc). Showed us we're actuaaly doing better than other plans available. Just choose wireless tab for the phone one.

We have verizon - each line added on after the primary is 9.99. The majority of my friends and family are also on verizon, so I have 4 phones on our plan and we share 700 minutes adn never go over. Any casual chatting happens only on nights or weekends if we want to talk to someone out of network.

My suggestion is to see what many people you'd call already have so you get free mobile to mobile. I had ATT and they are HORRIBLE - service and customer service, IMO.

You'll also want to look into who has the best coverage in your area. Not worth it to save $20 a month if half of your calls are getting dropped or you can't get phone reception in your house.

We've had AT&T for almost 10 years - through all the times that they were AT&T and other names and back to AT&T. They have great coverage and for 3 phones, we pay under $90/month. We've never had any problems with customer service... always been happy with them. Of course, we're no longer under contract with them. We only use our phones as phones, though. We don't text or do any of that other stuff.

Thanks! I posted this and then forgot I asked.

I was excited about the T-Mobile commercials, so it was a letdown to find out that the $5 a month add on was for a third line!

I think the PP comment about service is a really important point. I have Verizon and feel like I am paying too much, but to go somewhere else would be silly because the other carriers in town (AT&T, T-Mobile) have terrible coverage areas. I want to be able to sit in my house and talk on the phone, not step outside (like I would with AT&T).

I pay around $120 a month for two lines, 700 min. and unlimited txt and web. This is as cheap as it can get with out buying new phones
