French

Does anyone else use French as a second language study?

After much back & forth, it's what I've decided to do. I speak intermediate and read & write it fluently. We debated several other options - Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, but I think at this point I'd like to stick to what I know.

So, what do you use for your children?

I have some old texts. I have a tendency to use certain sentences in French pretty often - "May I have a kiss?" "Get in the car." DC respond to those comments automatically in the way we learn our primary language. In other word, I've never "taught" them what those things mean. We also sing some songs in French, and I've translated them when asked.

How did you begin? Do you use a curriculum or wing it?

I have Rosetta Stone but am going to also use a regular textbook curriculum. I think since you are fluent in it, you won't need as much. I might hire a tutor who is fluent to work with my children once a week. But you won't need that. But if you live near me....maybe you could be the tutor!

We have the Easy French which I am selling-it does not work for us. I'm going back to my high school/college textbooks, as well. Free since I already have them and we can't afford Rosetta Stone.

I'd love to have a community of other little people taking French, too! I doubt there are many others near us. Spanish seems to be the predominant second language by far.

I think I have Easy French somewhere in the basement. I have scores of language books, probably 20 or so are French. I love the RS concept, but it's expensive and seems to be more than what we'd need for French. We were considering it if we'd done another language.
