HS in Kentucky

Since our local school district's website has zilch info about homeschooling, I'm curious. My reading of the statutes indicates that all we need to do is send a letter to our local school board and that's it. OTOH, the local YMCA has a homeschool PE class. I'm considering enrolling DC, and their info says the class is "to meet the physical education requirement for homeschooling families." So perhaps I'm missing something somewhere.

Yep, I'm totally answering myself.

Okay, so I found some additional information that says we're required to keep attendance records (?) and that we have to have 1,062 instructional hours a year. Does anyone else have to do this? I'm not sure how that will work. I'd anticipated 2-3 hours - at most - daily. DS is somewhere in the middle of the 1st grade knowledge base for the local public schools, so if we did real academic work for 6 hours a day for 185 days, we'd zoom way ahead, which will be a disaster if we do ever go to school.

We will be doing museum days and things like that, so I'm assuming we can count them, no?

Your best bet is to sign up for local homeschooling lists and ask there. Check this list http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/...ks/support.htm and also yahoogroups.

My read of Kentucky requirements is that the hours of instructional time simply means that you must keep attendance. That could be writing as little as writing a five on the calendar for five hours. You aren't required to document or prove what you did in that time and you can define educational in whatever way you wish. It is a low regulation state. http://www.kheahomeschool.com/?q=/content/welcome

It's pretty easy to homeschool in Kentucky. You need to send a letter of intent to your school district within two weeks of their starting date. I think that CHEK has a sample letter on their website. Attendance records are required. I have a 180 day chart and write the date in when we've completed our day.

You can count any instructional time - museum days, extracurricular lessons, carschooling, learning in the market place . . . Our school year kicks off with a week at violin camp!

Yeah, I saw a recommendation on the education cabinet's page that you should call your superintendent's office because individual districts can require more. I suppose I'll do that and get the letter sent in.

Great! We'll probably do the Louisville Science Museum's Tuesday morning programs some, and I'm hoping to have DC work on some civic projects that will be good learning experiences. It looks like the only "required" subjects are language, civics, and math, so we're covered on that.
