Dvd recommendations for 3 year old?

DD has outgrown all her dvds. She can read, knows numbers and shapes, we have some Spanish and French dvds already....can you recommend any dvds I could get for her? I like her to only watch educational ones, and she watches them about 3 times a week, a half hour to an hour at a time. Maybe about science or something?

I just checked out from the library "Planet Earth." If you don't know about it, there are 5 or so discs, each contains about 3 different sections. The one we just checked out has The Great Plains, Jungles, and Shallow Seas. Each DVD would cover 3 different topics about Earth. It talks all about the animals of the region, climate, vegetation, etc. They are beautifully filmed and narrated. The only thing is, the Great Plains portion was very.....carnivorous? Lots of predator/prey type stuff that my 4yo was ok with but my 3yo was not a fan. So we skipped some parts.

We also watch the Magic Schoolbus videos, which are pretty educational, but fun too.

We have Planet Earth, and Ds thinks its boring It is a bit on the slow side. What about Schoolhouse Rock, or music dvd's like Raffi in concert? Peep in the Big Wide World and Signing Times....

My girls liked

Sid the Science Kid, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Reading Rainbow, Umi Zoomi, and Magic School Bus videos at that age.

Most of them are PBS videos we got at the library.

We (the adults) like Little Pim's language DVDs. V doesn't care about them yet, of course (nor would I want her to!) but we checked the Japanese set out from the library and loved them!

I agree with the recommendation for Magic School Bus. If you can stand them, Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego Go were very popular with my kids at 3, and Diego at least has a fair amount of content. The old Blues Clues with Steve are good too (I'm not a fan of the direction they took the show with Joe).

My kids also like "How it's Made" and "Mythbusters", but they are meant for adults, so YMMV.

We discovered PBS Kids Dragonfly TV when DD was about that age. Real kids doing real science. About 10 minute podcasts.

My son loves HArd Hat HArry! THey are from the 90's but he shows the kids all about firefighters or space. New topic each episode. A girl may not like as much but not too cheesey and very informative.

We've checked out a video called "Planets" from the library a couple times, the kids (3&5yo) both really liked it, very detailed and informative, and interesting visually. There's also a little part at the end that shows how they did some of the special effects in the video. I think it's this:

We haven't seen others in the series.

We're big fans of The Wonder Pets here. It has lots of different educational themes woven in it - musical styles (different every episode), geography/cultures (different place every episode), teamwork and problem-solving skills, and gentle humor.

My kids liked the "Here goes a ..." series (Here goes a train, here goes a garbage truck, here goes a fire truck, here goes...). Hard Hat Harry was good too, but longer. The Here Goes series are 30 minutes.

What about sing a long DVDs? We have a couple of those that dd really loved. Kids Songs, the Laurie Berkner band and a few Sesame Street ones that we liked .

These are my 2.5 yo's favorites, and they are sufficiently educational for me. (I'm pretty picky.) If your 3yo can read fluently, though, Super Why may not be of interest (though my 6yo will watch it, and she reads very, very well...)

oooh 3 is a 'difficult' age.

3 was when we stopped watching any nature shows. most of them were not age appropriate and by 3 my dd was having a hard time with killing and any sort of aggression.

in fact it was by 3 that we stopped doing anything 'educational' and watched just for the sheer joy of a 'story'.

it was then we started doing movies more. however i had to be careful. her fears were kicked in high gear. she could handle spiderman at 3 1/2, but NOT bugs life (too many suspense scenes. she can handle violence but not expressions of emotions or suspence where you dont know what's going to happen to the character). she refused to watch blues clues or sesame street. they were too 'academic' for her. she loved dora though. she looooooves adventure. i wished though it was more story focused and not so much on learning.

I love Between the Lions from PBS (and the website at PBS kids is great fun) and The Backyardigans on Nick Jr. Backyardigans seems junky, but it examines the idea of musical genre, and as great asides for any adults in the audience as well. My 8 y.o. and my 5 y.o. still love it.

Harold and the Purple Crayon DVDs are GREAT! Harold draws whatever he needs to take him wherever he wants to go. Highly recommended!!! Gentle and yet very engaging!
