waning supply in one breast

Hi Mamas! DD is 17 mo. I've noticed a definite decrease in supply on my right side though the left seems normal. It's uncomfortable to nurse much on the right and she definatly prefers to nurse on the left. PP AF returned just a couple of months ago... does this affect supply? Does this mean I'm going to lose supply all together soon? She and I both want to continue nursing for a good long while and this has me worried. Anything I can do?

As long as your supply remains good in one breast, I would think you can continue nursing as long as you want. I'm still nursing my 2-year old, and I've only had milk from one breast since he was 4 months old. He's practically never nursed on the left side and won't even try it now. It could be AF, though. I haven't gotten PP AF yet but I know with previous kids, AF did affect the supply a bit. Good luck!

I was about to post something similar... but my DD is only 3.5 months old. But my poor right boob produced waaaay less than the left.

DD prefers to nurse on the left, too, so it makes it make more milk, and starts a vicious cycle.

When pumping I get 3-4 ounces from the left and 1oz from the right.

My right side stopped producing 2 months after giving birth - I was so upset! The left side is still going strong nearly 4 yrs later (and is consequently a full cup size bigger).

This is exactly what I want to avoid!
I got a sore nipple on the left side two days after DD was born. It was much better in a week and was completely healed in six weeks. While the sore nipple was in full force, I usually tried to still nurse on that side, but it wasn't equal by any means. Since then, that side has always tended to shrivel up if it wasn't nursed on, but the other side will get all swollen and engorged if it's not used. Especially since DD has been on solids, the left side has been smaller than the right. The best thing I've found is to use the left side 3-4 times during the day, just until DD stops swallowing, and then switch sides if she still wants to nurse. Not to ever stay on that side for a long-term fall asleep nurse, but also be sure to use that side fairly frequently (DD probably nurses 5-7 times in 12 hours.)

This method seems to be working best for keeping them the same size, but not completely effective. I plan on nursing DD for at least 2 more years is this a good long-term plan?
