MDC Weight-loss Club: Monday weigh-in (March 15th) - Page 2

Hi - Can I join you guys? I'm Leah, I'm a sahm/wahm to my 2.5 yo dd Madeleine. I'm 5-0 165, and I've been losing weight for about a year, 30 lbs so far. My final goal is about 120ish but we'll see how I feel at 130. I've tried WW online but I (like oatmeal) really hated writing everything down. It did help me realize how much someone my size and activity level should be eating, so that was good. I'm trying to learn to run, and am working on a 9 week 5k training program so I do that 3 days a week and try to work in yoga or pilates a couple times a week, but in reality I have a hard time getting to it. I do sort of need a place to weigh in and feel like I'm working toward something, otherwise it's too easy to just let things slide. It's sounds like everyone is doing great and I look forward to this journey together. Cheers,

Leah

Starting: 170
Last week:168
This week: 168
Mini Goal:150
Final:135-140

Due to mastitis, I couldn't due yoga. Still waiting for my double stroller, so I can get walking (something I used to do every day). Started the yoga again tonight. I am six weeks post partum today and I just want to get back into some sort of exercise groove. Execise does wonders for my mental health, as well as my physical health.

Hi Leah! Welcome!

I hear ya on exercising at home. I have to get up and go to Curves to work out... the yoga/exercise videos just sit on the cabinet because on my way to the TV I see things that need done and never get around to it!

Oh, yes, yes, yes! Here's a great article about it from a really awesome magazine, Eating Well -- you have to click on the link which is a PDF file. And have a look at some of their other articles, really good info.

I really need some help here guys.

I'm thinking of giving up on my goals. The scale went up two pounds in the last two days and I know it's b/c of what's going on in my personal life. Things are very bad between me and DH, though we've started talking I'm leaning towards taking a marriage sabbatical. Of course, DH sees it as leaving him and rejection while my motives are FOR the marriage. I can't even think about exercise or proper eating right now as I am emotionally drained and eating alot of comfort foods. He wants to know for sure what I plan on doing and I have until the end of the month to make a decision so things are hanging in the balance.... Then I have the pressure of family and friends and what they think I should decide, etc.... Weight loss is just an extra strain and burden, and I certainly don't want to beat up on myself as I'm feeling like I've somehow failed my marriage so there is a temptation to feel like a failure in all areas, esp. when I'm really not doing well in them. Should I resolve my personal growth an marriage issues before I take a look at trying this seriously again? Do you think I can succeed until I resolve these things?

Reassure me, please.

Melissa-- First, I think you should STOP watching the scale! Put it in the closet and do NOT get it back out. Your goal shouldn't be for weightloss. Your goal should be for healthier living and eating. I'm not sure you should scrap everything. I think you should just strive to eat healthy and get exercise. I think you'll find it helps you emotionally.

Just do what you can and go with it. Do not stress out over it. You have to find happiness in what you are changing in your lifestyle in order for it to really work, kwim? If your changes make you miserable then you won't stick with them.

Melissa ((hugs))-
I think that you should give yourself a break. Stressing over gaining weight is going to hurt you in the long run. Weight loss - or pretty much any life change I think - is not all or nothing, it's doing the best you can in every moment. Be kind to yourself in other ways, too. If you are trying to change your life, try to make everything in it as good as possible, it seems like that makes the bad things more clear. So don't count calories or look at the scale, just think in terms of what your body needs and pamper yourself with good, nutritious food. I hope that you get some clarity and peace soon.

Melissa, I agree with the others. I think you should just try to be as healthy as you can, but not focused at all on losing weight or a diet of any kind right now. If you have one weight-related goal, it shoul be to MAINTAIN your current weight, and not let this sad time add 10 or 20 or more pounds, and make you feel even worse.

Well, I think it depends on you. Personally, what I eat and how much I work out really effect how I feel. eating lots of comfort foods and not working out and gaining weight makes me depressed and tired and drained. Working out relaxes me, relieves stress and tension, and makes me feel good about myself - all good things if you are dealing with a crisis about you marriage and the stress of making a decision. Also, for me comfort foods have lots of flour and sugar in them and they are hard on my system - sugar makes me crash in the end and this causes a feeling of depression and tiredness.

So, if I were facing the difficulties that you have explained I would, personally, recommit myself to regular work outs, yoga, healthy eating, and lots of attention to myself and my needs. I find that giving up on my goals makes me upset with myself and upset with the situation that is causing me to lose focus on what I want/need.

This is a reflection on how I would deal with it, which may not be what will work best for you. Good luck and many hugs.

Thank you all for your help. My biggest problem is being motivated enough with all the thoughts weighing on my mind to cook properly and funds are also low so we are down to the bare bones at home. I'm just taking a "time out" and not going to worry about it too much.

Thanks again

Can I join in ladies? Im not sure if there is a standard form fo this but I will add in what I can:

Starting: 144 (8 weeks ago)
Last Week: 139
This week: 139
Final Goal: 130

6 weeks ago after a looooong period of no excercise and too many sweets I started the following activities 6 days a week;

20 min walk (wdd)
10 min run (while dd plays in the sand box at the park)
30 min basic pilates workout
Cut out most junk things, but still a sweet snack (ice cream, brownies, ect) 3 times a week.

At first it was worikng well but I seem to have gotten to a weight that I cant get below. I need to stop all sweet snacks and eat 4 to 5 SMALL meals insted of 3-4 bigger meals a day. I love food so much! Also yesterday I started an advanced Windsor Pilates workout which is much harder. I know with these three things I can get down to 130, I just have to cange the eating habbits.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could/Should eat when I get that afternoon craving.

Thanks I hope to report some good news next week.

Welcome Audreysmom.

I used to take a protien shake in the pm when I was pregnant and I was good until supper. Also try a tall glass of water. Protien reduces cravings for some reason and at the same time will help you create lean muscle mass from all your hard Pilates work . I also do the Winsor Pilates 20 min. workout 2-4 times per week preceded by a 30 min low impact aerobic. I'm not taking the protien shakes anymore b/c of $ but hope to be able to again soon (DH is laid off until spring). You could also try a meal replacement shake or bar. I'm really into nutritional supplementation so I make up a fibre drink with 1/2 banana, yogurt, and 100% juice or milk/rice milk. That tides me over for my morning cravings. If you get alot of fibre in your diet already, just try a shake with banana and yogurt. You can also substitute your ice cream with rice dream or low fat frozen yogurt, and modify your brownie recipie to incluce applesauce instead of oil and honey or some other sugar substitute. You'd be amazed at how the small changes add up over time. I saw a chart at the Y that showed that even with modifying your fat intake by substituting in recipies you can lose 5 lbs in one year. I'm sure you'd level off after that, but it would really be worth the permanent weight loss.

DH and I are doing well. Will be starting counselling soon and have had some constructive discussions. He is now helping on a daily basis in the house which takes a big weight off me and an ability to focus on my weight loss strategies and meal planning. I just went shopping yesterday and got a tonne of fruits and veggies so I'll be on the right track for the next couple of weeks. We'll see what happens on Monday as I decided to put my scale away until Mondays to lessen the pressure .

Melissa-- I'm glad things are looking up

What kind of protein shake did you use?? My MIL likes The Zone stuff but I know it is pricey. It tastes good.

My mom bought me a smoothy machine for my b-day and it is coming in handy I need to get some good juice. Right now we only have cherry and grape juice in the house. We bought frozen fruit at Sams. It probably isn't the "best" but you get a big bag for 6.00 and it is already cut and frozen. I figure it will do until we have money to buy organic or have the garden to grow our own.

I use the protien shakes that Melaleuca makes. I also really like Soysations flavoured soy milk. It's half soy milk and half fruit juice. The protien drink I use is whey protien, but soy is also high in protien so I find a glass of soy milk will also do the trick for cravings. Soysations makes strawberry banana, trippleberry, chocolate, and another flavor I can't remember - peach and orange or something like that.

If you are thinking about juicing I hear the Champion Juicer or Mr. Juicer are best. They are about $200.00 in Canada so it's on my wish list. I hear the cheapo ones that Braun, etc. make heat up the juice b/c the fruit is shredded quickly instead of pressed and it destroys alot of the enzymes. We had one from Sears or something and for as much as we juiced (almost daily) it only lasted one year before the motor burned out.

That smoothie maker sounds great. We have a BaMix of Switzerland that we got at our local yearly home and garden show two years ago. It's like a wand blender but has different attatchments and a food mill. It's great. We made all our baby food with it, crushed flax for making bread and muffins, made our own bread crumbs, iced mochaccinos, home-made cheese spread, peanut-butter, smoothies, frozen yogurt, mousse, mayonnaise, low fat whipped topping from skim milk (really!), and much more. OK, I'll stop before I start to sound like an advertisement, lol. I should go work in sales for those guys! The other thing I've started buying is the Fruit and Veggie juice that SunRype makes. The veggie blend is carrot, lettuce, beet, parsley, watercress, celraic, and spinach juices. It is 100% juice and the iingredient list is true to the claim. I'm not so sure if V8 fruit and veggie is 100% but I like that too.
