We don't do soled shoes until 3ish. My middle child learned to ride a 2-wheeler in leather soled shoes.

But that is merely my humble 2 cents.
We got my ds's forst shoes at stride rite - and they were PERFECT for an early walker (he was 8.5mo when he was walking - he never cruised).

ETA - these are the ones we got. We liked the brown and blue, but they also have other, more neutral colors. THey were absolutely perfect - everything else we tried on him he couldn't walk in at all, but these he was up and walking right away. http://www.striderite.com/shopping/p...767&sColor=673

i finally ordered some soft stars yesterday!!! i love their website and it just doesn't irritate me. the cost kind of made me wait until it finally got cold but i'm excited to get them in the mail. thanks for the recommendations!
