Quick layette question

I never knew what a layette was until I received one today as a gift. Does a baby where a onsie underneath the layette? Could the baby just where a t-shirt and diaper under the layette?

As far as i know, a onesie is part of the layette. It's just the basic set of newborn items like onesies, pjs, socks, etc.

Oh, lol. Still learning my baby vocab. The item says layette on the tag, but it looks kind of like a night gown with elastic at the bottom.

A layette is just a collection of matching baby clothes. There's no rule that says all the pieces have to be worn together.

The gown with the elastic on the bottom is a nightgown, which honestly we really liked because since I use clothe diapers, those worked great with a wool soaker and fitted underneath them....
If you're planning on using cloth diapers, I'd probably shy away from the onsies and stick to the laptees, etc.

I love baby gowns. So convienent and adorable

I love those elastic nighties, too! It makes night time diaper changes SO much easier!

Yeah, I wouldn't put anything underneath the gown. The gown is to make diaper changes easier, a onesie would just make it more difficult. You can though, put a onesie under just about anything else. Sometimes its nice to have on a onesie under a cute outfit in case of a diaper leak or something. That way the outfit doesn't get stained.

Thanks for the info. (I had to google what soakers and laptees are.)
Sounds like this nightgown thing is really going to come in handy.

I live in the San Francisco area where it is usually foggy, or cold and damp. So I always put a onesie underneath daytime outfits. This would keep baby's chest warm and dry. Outer layer easily gets wet from drool or spit up.

For the first couple of months, DD lived in long sleeve kimono tee , diaper, and receiving blanket, period. Everybody tries to make you buy a whole wardrobe but start small and then build as baby gets older.

I agree. We needed far fewer clothes (and more recieving blankets!) than I had previously thought.

for my midwest winter baby i often put a onesie under a footed romper. i didn't really have pj vs. day clothes, as they sleep so much, i just put the baby in comfy outfits - mostly one piece outfits or onesie and pants

I use gowns at night until they stop pooping at night (around 4-6 weeks) Like the PP said, it makes night time changes easier.

I do dress my babies every day in outfits, but they are mostly one piece outfits. Most of my 3 month size outfits are actually onesies, but ones that have designs/patterns on them. My babies are into 6 month size clothing by around 6 weeks, though.

I never use those plain white undershirt style onesies. I live where it's hot, and I've had 3 summer babies. Just no need for those.
